Not sure if this had anything to do with it, but I had also renamed my hard drive from 'Leopard' to 'Snow Leopard'. But I have changed the name in the past without it affecting Time Machine, so this is perhaps unrelated.

That's exactly my experience...changed the boot drive name during a "clean" SL install and TM wasn't recognized. As soon as I reinstalled SL using the original boot drive's name everything was normal. (It also shows one backup of the new install with the other drive's name...thinking it's two different machines.)
