Backups from 10.5 are not visible in Time Machine after 10.6 install

After installing 10.6 TimeMachine will not show my older backups even though they are in the backup volume and the earliest backup is listed as Aug 8 2008. The only backup available is from yesterday. Any clues?

Michael271 - I have the original single band. I'll be helping some friends upgrade to snow Leopard in the next couple of days and they have the dual band TC's. I'll see if they have the same problem. I remember having to revert back to 7.3.2 when I had Leopard as well. I believe it was because Apple TV started to download movies very slowly. When I reverted back to 7.3.2 they went back to downloading pretty quick. It may be just an issue with the single band like you say.

I've noticed that if I click on 'Logs and Statistics' for Time Capsule in Airport Utility using 7.3.2, the network connection between the computer and the TC is dead stable, never dipping or wavering below the full connection speed.

Under 7.4.1 and (less so under) 7.4.2, the connection speed tends to be a bit unstable, going from 270mbps (using 5ghz, wide channels) all the way down to 30mbps at times. It just never stays rock solid at 270 the way it does under 7.3.2.

7.3.2 was the last firmware version dedicated to the original Time Capsule and may be the best version to use after all (for now, anyway). The only downside to using it was that power cycling/restarts were needed sometimes to get it going properly (it would get lethargic and slow right down). 7.4.2 rarely, if ever, needs a power cycle but it has the instability issue (greatly improved over 7.4.1). Now, it also has the 'open twice' bug to go along with it.

I'm really curious to see how the dual-band models fare. I'll be watching this space!

I have the same problem, original Time Capsule, and restarting Time Machine makes no difference. I actually needed the Time Machine backup for the first time (as some iCal agendas had disappeared in the upgrade to SL) and couldn't access it! Very disappointing.

Have you repaired the sparse bundle?

Tried the +*Browse ...+* option?

Nice one Pondini, that worked for me.

When I brought up the list of partitions/disk, only one was available. I selected it, and voila, the whole history of TM backups was available again.

Now it all works fine (and a helluva lot faster than Leopard too)

Not sure if this had anything to do with it, but I had also renamed my hard drive from 'Leopard' to 'Snow Leopard'. But I have changed the name in the past without it affecting Time Machine, so this is perhaps unrelated.

Cheers again! 🙂

Be careful with that -- that usually causes a new, full backup of the drive! And if you have a Finder window open to the new name, then go into TM, you won't see backups of the drive when it had the old name unless you click your computer's name in the sidebar and select folder with the old name. It's as if you'd removed one drive and installed a different one.

That's exactly my experience...changed the boot drive name during a "clean" SL install and TM wasn't recognized. As soon as I reinstalled SL using the original boot drive's name everything was normal. (It also shows one backup of the new install with the other drive's name...thinking it's two different machines.)

Almost . . . two different drives.
