Appletalk & Snow Leopard

Yesterday I received and installed Snow Leopard only to discover that it no longer supports printers on an appletalk network. Since this will cause me some grief to sort out, for the short term I want to restore my Macpro to 10.5 via Time Machine. Can someone please confirm that Time Machine will restore the applications, etc. as well as the system once it wipes the Hard Drive - I can't find any info that actually confirms this.

I had been using the TCPquantum hack to get my SE/30 running System 7.5.5 to network just fine with Tiger and Leopard Macs:

I don't have Snow Leopard, but it appears that the TCPquantum hack doesn't work anymore to solve the problem on Snow Leopard. Excluding FTP, is there no alternative way to allow System 7.5.x, OS 8.x or OS 9.x Macs to network with Snow Leopard machines?

Well I have the same problem and I dont want to dump my perfect working LaserWriter4/600. So I re-activated my beautiful museum Powerbook Pismo which has 10.4 installed and connected my AsanteTalk box to the Powerbook. MBP, Powerbook and Asante were connected with ethernet via an Ethernet Hub. I activated the printer sharing on the Pismo and voila I could print from Snow Leopard to my Apple Talk Laserwriter !

Well I have the same problem, and I don’t want to dump my perfectly working LaserWriter Select 360.

I was using this printer on my network via a Farallon EtherMac iPrint Adapter. This allowed me to use Localtalk (AppleTalk).

Since Snow Leopard does not support AppleTalk and my printer (which does an excellent job printing) has both serial and parallel ports, I purchased a USB to Parallel (Centronics CN36 Male / IEEE1284) cable and now can print using one of the USB ports on my Mac Pro. Hope this helps.

You may have discovered this. But if you have not please see the link below. I hope this helps.

"AppleTalk note: If your printer can only use the AppleTalk protocol, the printer must be connected to, and then shared by, an appropriate AppleTalk-capable printer server. Snow Leopard can then use that print share to print via a supported IP-based protocol. See the "How to add a printer" section of this article for details about how to connect to a shared printer to your Snow Leopard system."

Hello,

I've just upgraded to Snow Leopard, I used to be able to print from my MacBook Pro via a Netgear Router to a Brother HL-1470N printer. Because Snow Leopard has gotten rid of AppleTalk, I'm no longer able to print wirelessly, which is kind of a necessity.
I've tried various blogs on how to install printers on Snow Leopard but to no avail.
Can anyone help please?

Thanks
