disk utility crashes 10.6

After I installed 10.6 on my mac with out first doing a clean install disk utility now crashes as soon as I launch it. Has anyone else seen this? if so how can I fix this so that I can use disk utility again.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

I have not had Disk Utility crash (admittedly I only looked at it briefly) But the trio of Address Book, iCal and Mail crash hard in Snow Leopard, although all three exhibit slightly different behaviour.

Address Book shows up with no records although I have about 3000 in my database. I let this chug last night and the records were there this morning. But when I restarted, the records were gone again and I was faced with a blank Address Book again.

iCal opens as a blank calendar and the CRASHES hard immediately.

Mail opens and imports my mail. It then shows me my Mail Browser window with all my addresses but the spinning beach ball never stops.

This is all after installing 10.6 on top of a system with 10.5.8
System: 8 core 3 ghz Mac Pro with 10 gb of RAM
Not using Exchange but am using Mobile Me and Sync Services

After the first time I installed and this happened, I reverted to 10.5.8 via Time Machine and checked to make sure my Address Book, Mail and iCal were cool. They were. As a precaution, I exported archives of iCal and Address Book.

Then I rebuilt permissions and reinstalled 10.6 again. This time checking Rosetta on the install.

Same behaviour. Next stop a call to Apple. That all three of their core apps are hosed is perplexing. Everything else seems to work fine.

I am NOT impressed...

Hi All,

I"m having this problem too - looks like SL install doesn't create some Library files properly, Disk Utility and the Server Admin Tools crash as the install is missing progams - see Disk Utility Crash Log excerpt below:

Use the spotlight bar to search for "Disk Utility"

There will be 2 in there. One located in:

Macintosh HD > Applications

and one located in:

Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities.

Try both files. The one located in Applications didn't work, crashed, and delivered a similar report to what I've seen in here.

The other launched without issue.

I did repair my permissions using my Leopard Disk from boot first... perhaps a combination of the two steps fixed things for me. But, you may want to try both, it worked for me!

I have encountered a different problem:

When using "erase free space" a message pops up near the end of the routine "system folder running low on memory". This occurs when running disk utility in the start up disk. Never really noticed this problem before 10.6.

Also only seeing one copy of Disk Utility...user> applications > utilities>disk utilities V 11.5

No extra copies.
