install SL if DVD is broken

I would like to install SL on my macbook, but its DVD drive is broken and cannot read disks anymore. Can I have my macbook boot from a DVD mount on my iMac? (like macbook air remote disk)

I'd borrow or buy an external USB DVD burner; lots around and they're pretty cheap now.

Are you not getting the internal drive fixed because it is out of warranty?

You would do it just like the Mac Air does. My combo drive is dead on my MB and I've been installing things from my Mini's combo drive.
