I've had my 20" Alum iMac since Aug '08 and have only burned a music CD thru iTunes one time. Today, I tried to burn a movie on a 4.7GB DVD-RW, and an error came up that said "failed to burn due to medium write error." I tried several different makes of blank DVD-RW, but they all say the same thing. Any help would be great.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), 4GB RAM

What brand did you use? Those drives are known to be "finicky" (at best); mine likes good quality media such as Verbatim; Imation works well also.

The first one I tried was the standard Apple supplied 4.7GB media 2X DVD-R. Then I tried a Ritek 8X DVD-RW. Neither worked. I even went thru the finder/disk utility "burn" command, and got the same "medium write" error. By the way, I followed the same procedure on my mid-2008 13" MacBook using the Ritek disc, and had no problem whatsoever. Both are Matshita drives but the MacBook is obviously a different model.

One Apple tech suggested some time ago that it could also have to do with the fact that the iMac drive is vertical vs. the horizontal in a laptop (not sure about that, but that's what I was told). Anyway, I'd try a couple of different brands and if none work, I can only guess that it's the drive malfunctioning. I'd make an appointment at a genius bar and/or call Apple if you're still under warranty - I don't know what else to suggest; maybe someone else here can come up with another idea.

Well, today I tried 2 different brands of DVD - Somei 16X and a Chinese brand that is supposed to be a quality disc. I went thru the usual burn command in the disk utility, and after about 2 minutes of spinning and whirring, it ejected the disc and stated "The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media." I'm currently working overseas and don't have the Genius Bar option. I am under the 3yr extended warranty though.

What brands did you try? I'd try one last time with a Verbatim disk; if that doesn't work and you're under warranty, I'd say it's time to call Apple.

I tried a Somei 16X and a Chinese brand that I can't read. Tomorrow I'm going to buy a can of compressed air and see if that might clear the lense (saw that rectifier on another thread). Then get either a Verbatim or Maxwell disc to see if that helps. As a last resort, I'll get a DVD cleaning kit.
