New OS and OKI Data printers

Just incase someone is looking for the drivers for the latest oKI Data printers for Snow Leopard, there are none. I have an OKI Data 5150N and tried the all of the drivers available from OKI Data and none work. I also tried "Generic PCL" and "Postscript" with no success. I sent an EMAIL to OKI Data support and they said that they don't have the drivers for Snow Leopard BUT they should be available "soon".

IMAC 24" 3.06 GHz 4 GB, Mac OS X (10.5.5), G Tech Q Drive, G Tech G Drive, 3 USB Hubs, USB to Serial Adapter.

Well, I'm glad they at least plan to make a driver available in the future. I emailed them a week or two ago to ask them if they planned to support snow leopard and their response was ambiguous (can't tell you when a driver will be available). For the present, I can print using Print Sharing through my laptop, which is still running Leopard, so long as I know a snow leopard driver is in the works. (My Oki C5800ldn is not a PostScript printer so I can't use the other responder's approach.)

I echo your concern with Oki. I have a c5200n that is my work horse in my office. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple after upgrading 4 systems to SL. The funny thing is that 3 of the systems, the older Intel architecture I could get to work. My brand new MBP fully loaded to the max, we could not get it to recognize any of the Oki drivers for USB or IP. Temporarily I am printing through one of my other systems through printer sharing.

Really dissapointing

Edward, That is good news as Oki support guy wrote me Friday that he did not know when new drivers will be released and suggested watching the oki web site!
I printed the Menu Map on my Oki and sure enough, there is its IP address as mediated by my Airport Express router.

BTW I just went through something like this setting up a new Dell PC with a two year old Brother printer. Despite updated drivers the Dell could not find the printer until I input the IP address.
So here Apple is just like the other guys.

As Barbara mentioned you can print out your menu map from the printers control panel, this will list the IP issued by the DHCP server of your router. Personally, I suggest changing the IP address in the printer to a static IP Address rather than have it pull one from the DHCP server, so as to avoid it possibly pulling a different IP address on a restart sometime in the future.

Also, the non-Postscript 5100 series that someone mentioned, I'd try using the generic PCL driver to see if you can get that working.

I too was upset all weekend with NO Oki drivers and a reply today : A snow leopard driver is unavailable at this time. I'm unable to give you a release date on drivers for any of our printers. I recommend you continue to check our website for any updates.

Just plugged it into my Airport Express, added printer, it saw the OKI using Bonjour, add and it printed fine.

From OKI tech support today
I quote
"You can try a postscript driver, but I'm unable to confirm that this will
work since the operating system is very new. I'm hoping a driver will be
release in the near future."

I wrote back that if OKI does not release drivers the company better have a substantial trade in or buy back policy.
Gee, its not as if Snow Leopard was a secret all year!
I just invested several hundred dollars in cartridges and fusers and such since I get four or more years worth out of these things (My Oki is five years old ) and figured that if I get some more years out of the printer I will have had real value.
if we get drivers I will have gotten real value from the OKI which is a workhorse, old faithful.

A lot of OKI laser printers and MFPs support PostScript. Those will work fine with the generic PostScript PPD (Driver). If this is a network printer, remember that 10.6 no longer supports AppleTalk, so you will have setup the printer via it's IP address (Print a test/configuration page, or look at the front control panel on the printer). Please double check the subnet/mask to make sure the printer is reachable by your computer. You may have never setup the IP address of your printer. So you might have to find that manual. When have the good IP address of the printer, you can manually setup the Printer in Add Printer (in Print & Fax Prefs). You will have to pick a Protocol. Try JetDirect first. Second LPD. Note if this is a USB printer, just plug it in...no IP address needed! The Driver you will to select will be the Generic Postscript PPD (driver). For the adventuresome, you could also copy the PPD file for the OKI printer from your 10.5 system (/Libraries/Printers/PPDs....) and put it into the sample place on your 10.6 system. (This May work, so I leave this to the reader to sort out those details)

If you have a printer that requires a GDI driver (Many posted here do), your only option for now is setup a 10.5 system that has the driver installed and that can already print to that printer. Once you can print from 10.,5, just enable printer sharing. 10.6 system can print to 10.5 shared printers. You may again need to select the Generic PPD on the 10.6 system. As long as the 10.5 system can print, it will convert the 10.6 PS to a form that the 10.5 driver can use and print. Not Ideal, but at least an answer until OKI updates their GDI driver.

I hope this helps!

OK, I got my OKI 5800ldn working. Here's how. Install the diver for OS X10.5 from OKI's site if you haven't already. Get the printer's IP address if you haven't already. (As another poster pointed out, it is better to assign a permanent address yourself; it explains how in the OKI manual.). Open the Print & Fax system's preferences panel and click on the + (add printer) button. Ignore the Printer Name (though it's correct) you get with Bonjour. Instead, click on the "More Printers..." button you see at the lower left hand of the window. Select "OKI TCP/IP" in the drop down menu at the top center. Type your printers IP address in the box provided. Your printer driver title (mine was C5800L) should now show up under "Model Name." Select it and then click on the "Add" button. That's it; print away!
