iPhone flashing gray apple screen

I have a 8GB iPhone 3G running 3.0.1.

The screen is flashing the gray apple every 10 seconds or so and is totally unresponsive. When I plug it into the wall charger or the USB to my iMac, it comes back and seems to work fine, but once unplugged, it goes back to the flashing apple after about a minute or 2.

I have restored settings, but am still having the problem. My phone is unusable. Is this a battery issue? Please help!

uh, yeah, ha ha. If it was that easy I wouldn't be spending my time on this problem.

I can power it down by holding down the home and power buttons, but nothing powers it up except connecting it to the computer or wall charger. Again, then its fine. About 2-3 minutes after I unplug it it begins flashing the gray apple again every 10 secs. or so - continuously.

If anyone has any helpful ideas I would love to hear it as the phone will have to go in otherwise. I don't see anyone with my same problem and I'm afraid its the battery.

I set up an appointment at the apple store and talked to the "genius", I was told that I had a problem with my sleep/wake button. I left the phone plug into the wall all night and it was working fine this morning when I took it to the apple store, but as soon as they messed with the sleep\wake button it when on the fritz again. I got it working again by holding the sleep/wake and home button. I am not convinced that it has to do with the sleep/wake button, more likely the hibernate piece of the software. I changed the setting to never and I didn't have the problem. I am not sure if any of this info is of help to you.

Try restoring the iPhone from recovery mode, as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

Yes, I did restore the phone 2xs a few days ago. - No help.

I just read what ltemple said about the sleep/wake settings. I just went in and turned auto-lock from 1 min to never. The phone is working not plugged in and seems to be staying on!!!!! It is not going to my wallpaper or sleeping at all, but this is progress! Has anyone heard of this?

Forgive me that I really don't know all of the functions of auto-lock (never read the manual). I will try to mess with it some more, but I am happy there seems to be some success!
