Another device using IP address error Wake

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I've had several instances where I woke up the machine and could not get on the internet. After 10 seconds or so, I get an error message which indicates that another device is using the IP address. The solution seems to be to reset my Airport. I have two AirPort Express stations and they are on a WDS. I turn the Main station off and on and then everything works fine. Nothing about my network set up has changed in months.

Hi.
I have virgin broadband with the standard wireless netgear router etc.
I have just spent ages looking for the answer for this ip problem as my girlfriends computer suddenly stopped being able to connect to the internet despite the airport connection being full. I connected to the Netgear router settings by typing http://192.168.1.1/ into my browser and filling in the username and password (default for virgin: username: virgin password: password). Here you can set up the router. If you go to 'wireless settings' you can change the 'channel' number. I couldn't access this panel from the computer with the ip address problem - I can see that this would be really annoying for those of you with only one computer. However I simply changed the channel by one number. Then (on the computer with the ip problem) I went to the system preferences>network>advanced>tc/ip and clicked 'Renew DCHP Lease'. Click 'OK' and then 'Apply'
The airport sprung to life and the browser loaded the homepage!!

I realise that this may not apply to everyone but hope this helps.

Just thought I'd wake this up as it's started happening on my iMac. So far it's only a couple of times but there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. According to my router no other device has been assigned the same IP address but the Mac says still says another device is using the same IP address. It's even corrupted my iTunes library (locates on NAS) as it dropped the connection whilst I was running iTunes. Any solution yet?

Can't be sure if this narrows things down yet (the problem with an intermittent failure is it's difficult to be sure if you've ever reached the bottom of it). I have an Airport Extreme in the office and an Express to stream iTunes to the lounge. If I switch off the Express then the problem SEEMS to go away, which implies there's a conflict going on between the Mac and the Express. I had been wondering why I haven't come across any posts from businesses about this problem (it would be a disaster to have this sort of network failure if you were trying to run a business). Maybe businesses either use wired networks or tend to go for Extremes rather than Expresses?

I have the same problem running Snow Leopard but it has only started in the last week or two.
I connect wireless to a Time Capsule that plugs into my BT router/modem.

I also have a second wireless connection in my house so when I get the error I just connect to the other broadband connection and then go back to the time capsule connection and all works ok.

It seems to get the error when the iMac comes out of sleep mode...but not all the time.

It is starting to get annoying.

I was intermittently having a problem like this with a network that I set up recently. I hope this experience might help someone.

The configuration was as follows:

Telecom line --> BbH --E-> Tc --W--> 2 x iMac

Key
BbH = Broadband hub running DHCP
Tc = Time Capsule running a WiFi network
--E-> = Ethernet connection
--W--> = WiFi connection
iMac = iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.2 acting as a DHCP client
connected to the internet via the Tc WiFi.

In "some circumstances" the two iMac would start to complain that another device had taken their IP number and when checked they would both indeed have the same number. I assumed that it had something to do with the order in which they and the hub and the Time Capsule were switched on, or whether they had gone into sleep mode but despite some careful experimentation I was unable to determine the exact circumstances that triggered the problem and was left with suggesting "shut everything down and then turn each component on ... waiting for it to be "ready" before starting the next thing ... that usually worked at least for a while.

Yesterday I installed the latest Mac OS X update 10.6.6 and downloaded and installed a firmware update for the TimeCapsule - sorry I am not at the location with the problem at the moment and I can't remember the Firmware version number ... but the update has been released in the last week or so.

I am pretty sure that the firmware update has fixed it.

This SEEMS to have resolved the problem BUT as it was happening intermittently ... it MIGHT come back to haunt us ... but so far so good.

That happens to me on occasions, but not if I leave the network on for several days. When it does happen, there is usually a few seconds wait and the IP numbers are re-allocated. What I did not see in the postings (and I have an almost identical setup to "grow on Apple Discussions" -- yours is TC mine is Airport Extreme), is that one of those -- preferably the TC -- should be on bridge mode. If that is so, the DHCP router will be the one allocating IP numbers.
