FCP 4 HD won´t import mov files

Hi,

I exported a clip with the QT conversion option and added a few of the menu´s special effects (lens flare, sepia, etc.). The file opens all right with QT, but when I try to import it to FCP, I get an error message. This also happens if I try to open the file from my desktop using the "Open with..." option and select FCP.

I had no problem importing the file to iMovie, so I am really puzzled about this...

Hi Kevan,

Thanks for replying. I used the standard QT conversion in the drop down export menu. The message says:

File error: 1 file (s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown

I am able to open the file in Quicktime. I want to incorporate that section into a sequence. If I try to export it as a Quicktime movie, I don´t have access to the special effects filters that appear under the QT Conversion menu.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm guessing that you used a QT conversion with settings that FCP is not reading. Can you list the settings that were used...Image dimension, frame rate, audio sample rate, video codec, audio codec...etc.

Are you able to export a Quicktime Movie without the QT filters?

Have you tried exporting without the QT filters, could be causing a problem, I just don't know enough about them.

Have you tried locating plug-ins for the filter effects that can be applied in FCP instead?

iMovie and FCP read different types of files. The ones iMovie uses have the video and audio combined...may be why you're getting your specific error.

Post your export settings, and we'll see if anyone else jumps in.

I am having the exact same problem here. Without going into too much detail as to why I need to do this (aesthetic reasons to match imported iMovie QT's), I need to export a sequence from FCP 4HD as a Quicktime and then re-import it back into the same FCP 4HD program. Exporting the QT works fine. The QT file opens up fine in the Quicktime program and even in iMovie, but for the life of me I cannot import it back into FCP. I get exactly the same error message as the earlier user.

I have tried exporting at different settings, using export as QT Movie, using QT conversion (different settings)... none of these work.

It seems to be a bug, but I can't find the workaround.

Any suggestions.

Don't know if this will help you, Tony, but it worked for us ...

We're running FCP5 and were not able to import a QT file that we received from an intermediate server over the Internet. We would get "File error : wrong type" but it would play fine in QuickTime player and After Effects. We tried re-rendering it from After Effects and that would import okay into FCP but we lost timecode.

We finally tried "Save as..." in QuickTime Pro and saved the file with a new filename and voila! Imported into FCP5 fine with timecode. Yea!

I didn't find this solution, my friend found out after pulling his hair out, so I can't take credit for it, I'm just reporting it in case it helps someone else.

I am also experiencing the same problem with the same error. i captured an old VHS tape through my DV deck using QT7 pro. it recorded fine and will import into imovie and open in QT just fine but will not import into FCP5.0. Exporting the file from QT to a QT movie and all is fine with the FCP import.

It definately seems to be a bug and am hoping the upcoming tiger update will fix this. I'll go ahead and make a report to apple on this. Unless someone knows of why this is happening.

I am having the same problem with importing a file exported from
iPhoto. I have tried to upload it into Quicktime and then export
it under a different format, but is still not working.
Could the problem be like with importing photos into
final cut pro? Where you have to change the pixel aspect ratio from
Square to non-square? How do you change this in an exported
mov file from iPhoto?

File error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown

I get that message. I wanted to know if you found a solution. I am using Final Cut 4.5

I just started getting error messages whenever I try to import a file. Whatever file I choose gets a window that says:

"File error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown"

Never had a problem with Final Cut before. I'm baffled. Please help. I already tried trashing the preferences.

I am not able to import any type of file at all. Quick time movies, audio, livetype, etc. I have been able to import all these files for several months. Now for no apparent reason I am unable to import files.

I have looked at different discussions of this same problem. There seems to be an access problem. The files are valid. They will open with Quicktime. They will import into iMovie.

So the problem seems to be that FCP cannot access the files.

Anyone know the solution?
