The version without iLife is intended as an upgrade for those who have bought Leopard, and it is sold on the condition that you already have Leopard.

For those with Tiger, it's intended that you should buy a version priced to reflect the fact that you didn't buy Leopard. You could buy the version with iLife, or alternatively you could buy Leopard plus the Snow Leopard upgrade - I'm not sure whether this would work out any cheaper, though it would be worth checking the prices on Amazon which are sometimes cheaper than Apple.

Yes you can.

You don't need to install the iLife 09 or iWork 09 application suites if you don't want to.

If you are talking about buying the $29 upgrade pack and using that to upgrade to Snow Leopard that is a different story. In effect you would be stealing from Apple.

Apparently you can, but the purchase of this pack is based on you owning (and paying for) a licence for Leopard. If you don't, you would be obtaining and using the software without meeting the full Licence Agreement (EULA) terms.

I pointed out in another post that if say 1 million Tiger users bought the $29 upgrade to Snow Leopard, this would net Apple $29 million (nice for a day out shopping), however if those Tiger users followed the correct upgrade route and bought the Box Set @ $169 this would net Apple $169 million. A difference of $140 million (or LOSS of $140 million if Tiger users followed the cheapskates path).

A loss of $140 million might make a company reconsider the whole Activation question regarding their software.

I bought a new Mac Pro a couple of weeks ago. I qualify for the Up-To-Date Snow Leopard upgrade for $9.95. I could use that to install Snow Leopard on all my 5 machines. Did I?

No.

I purchased a Snow Leopard Family Pack and have legitimate copies of Snow Leopard on all my Macs.

Why?

I don't want to be a deciding factor in a company forcing Activation down our throats instead of showing Mac Users trust to do the right thing as Apple are currently showing us. If you abuse the trust in any relationship, relations start to fall down and distrust always follows (I sound like an agony aunt . . . aaaaaaaaargh!!!)

Bottom line, you can do it the right way or the wrong way. It's your choice, just don't be the one to complain if activation is forced upon us and you helped it on it's way.

Thank you all for your help. But do not get me wrong: I am not trying to swindle Apple or undermine Apple's trust in it's user base. It's just that I bought my Mac.with Tiger installed (my first computer) and don't really know what is protocol. And also after reading through the forum's it sounds as though the i life and i work apps.are not any better than what I already have and don't warrant the cost of up-grade.I have no problem with paying a reasonable price for a good product that I can use.It just seems to me that this scenario is like cable or sat.TV where you must buy a package of programing even if you only want one or two specific channels.Sure I don't have to use all the apps.on the disk but I do have to pay for them, right? Lets just all bow-down to the dictates of corporate America and let them tell us what is in our best interests.God bless America.
