Epson R1800 Printer no longer works

Very disappointed with this upgrade. If I had known that my Epson R1800 printer would no longer work I would never have installed this upgrade. Why does Apple do this? Why change the system so that my existing drivers no longer work?

Okay, so now I have to use Gutenprint. I have paid a lot of money to profile my printer and paper combinations, well over $350, now they are all useless!

Why cannot Apple warn customers that upgrading to Snow Leopard may cause their printers to stop functioning.

Yes, I can use Gutenprint, but now I have to re-profile all of my papers all over again!

I am seriously considering re-installing my previous version (10.5.8) just to avoid all of the hassles.

Thank you Apple for one big headache.

Okay, I got the thing working by downloading the latest Epson driver from their (US) web site.

Pity that the auto update function for printer drivers did not work. I did all that was necessary to perform a software update to check for new printer drivers and it delivered nothing, even though a new driver was in fact available at the Epson US web site.

Anyway, it's working now.
If anyone spent any time mulling over this issue, thank you for that, and my apologies for wasting any forum member's time.

HI Ed,

I managed to locate an updated driver for the R1800 printer on Epson America's web site. It has been updated to support Snow Leopard. Just download it, follow all the install instructions, then, if necessary, select your printer again in printer preferences.

here is the link:

Hope it works for you.

I have installed OS X 10.6. My Epson R1800 printer refuses to print.

I installed the latest Epson Driver for the R1800, both the Drivers and Utilities Combo Package, file epson 13186.dmg and the Common Updater, file 13044.dmg. The new driver is version 6.12. Apple System Profiler/Printer shows the correct driver version 6.12, and the Profiler/FireWire shows EP1394D3 Printer.

When trying to print files from several applications, the Stylus Photo R1800 (FW) application" jobs status shows" an error as follows: Library/Printer/EPSON/InkjetPrinter/Filter/rastertoescp.app/Contents/MacOS/rast ertoescp. No such file or directory.

I would appreciate any help.

HI,

I think I understand from your post that you are using a firewire connection to your R1800.

As of this date I believe there is a problem with the firewire interface to this printer, that is, there is no working firewire driver in 10.6. I think Apple is going to release their own version in October, that is the GutenPrint version.

I don't use the firewire connection. Historically it has given me too much trouble, and there is no advantage with the additional speed. I use the USB connection as it is much more reliable and robust. This should work for you as well.

Select Printer & Fax in your System Preferences and delete the Firewire R1800 version of the R1800 printer and add the USB version of that printer. Make sure you get the Epson driver and not the GutenPrint (Apple supplied) driver. It is identified as Epson Stylus Photo R1800. The other will have the name GutenPrint in it.

Add that to your printer list and you should be ready to go.

cheers, hope this helps.

Check that you have Rosetta installed. This is part of OSX that is used to run Power PC (Motorola G5) applications, like old Epson drivers. I know you said you downloaded the latest version of the driver, but it will not hurt to do this. (There was another post about this driver, which stated that the 10.6 R1800 driver was just a rename and amalgamation the OSX10.5 driver).

That being the case, that original OSX10.5 driver may have already been using Rosetta to run properly. If Rosetta was not installed (as mine was not) when you installed 10.6, then this may be the reason you cannot see the latest 10.6 driver from Epson.

You can load Rosetta from your original 10.6 install disc (its under Optional Installs) and re-boot your machine.

Dear hangininthere; in light of your upcoming art exhibition, I suggest you revert to the OS version you were running prior to upgrading to SL so you can do your printing easily. The time to upgrade to a new OS is not when you urgently need your computer for an important project. Hopefully, you created a clone of your Mac's boot drive prior to installing SL.

If this issue continues to occur after your art exhibition, you might be better off submitting a tech support request to Epson, via Epson's web site.

Good luck

Epson R2400. Printing from InDesign CS3.

After upgrade to SL the outputs have bad color issues. I downloaded the new driver from Epson and that didn't help. I've created a printer using both the Gutenberg and the old driver, but it did not help.

I also lost of my ICC Profiles. I've re-downloaded them twice from Epson and they will not show up in my color mgmt options. That one is new to me.

I've resorted to printing via PDF from an old laptop that is still running 10.5. It works. It's not ideal however and I am still testing.
