visual voicemail?

Hi

I recently upgraded to the new 3gs 32g from the original (beloved) iphone.

In addition to the problem with the battery not lasting even 12 hours, I find an issue with VISUAL VOICEMAIL.

As I roam frequently in other countries, like Canada and Europe, I switch to wireless to avoid the data fees. This has worked very well and still does with the exception of the Visual Voicemail.

Now, when I am out of the USA, and Dta Roaming DISABLED the Visual Voicemail cannot be used (apparently) unless I do re-enable Data Roaming. This was not the case with the previous phone.

Is there a setting that I need to change or am I screwed?

Visual voicemail messages are downloaded to the iPhone via the carrier's data or internet network only, which is the same with the first generation or original iPhone. This has not changed since the first generation or original iPhone was released. Visual voicemail messages cannot be downloaded to the iPhone via an available wi-fi network. If you have data roaming turned off with the iPhone when roaming internationally, you won't receive visual voicemail messages.

I do not believe that you are screwed. This will save you money in the long run. Look at this as a positive feature, i.e., you won't be getting unexpected charges.

By the way, you talk about upgrading to the 3GS. What did you have previsouly, i.e., what phone and what service?

press and hold the 1 key on the keypad to access your voicemail the old fashioned way while your out of visual voicemail coverage.

note this would be billed as a normal call to the us so roaming rates would apply.

Thanks Allan and the rest for the replies.

I may be hallucinating but I could swear (and frequented do swear) that I had visual voice mail on my 2G iPhone previously while using WiFI. But since the disastrous battery issue is worse than the VVmail, I guess I can live with it.

I used a first generation iPhone for over a year, and visual voicemail messages are definitely downloaded to the iPhone via the carrier's cellular data or internet network only.

When not roaming internationally when connected to an available wi-fi network for internet access, the cellular network is available in the background for visual voicemail access. Visual voicemail messages are not downloaded to the iPhone via the internet connection associated with an available wi-fi network.

When roaming internationally with data roaming off, visual voicemail messages cannot be downloaded to the iPhone and are not routed through or downloaded to the iPhone via the internet connection associated with an available wi-fi network no different when connected to the internet via an available wi-fi network when not roaming internationally.

Hi- OK I can live with this.

But now even when I turn data roaming on, I can't seem to get my custom message to work. It is there- I can check and listen to it, but it still defaults to the standard one. And I do save it.

What am I doing wrong?
