The application Finder.app can't be opened.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard yesterday, and I'm having a lot of troubles, Finde, Time Machine and Disk Utility being the most annoying of them. I don't really know which one of them is making the others unstable / crash but well that's starting to be very irritating, now when I try to start the Finder I get this :

*The application Finder.app can't be opened.*
-10810

Restarting the Computer ( Mac Book Pro Uni ) usually fix that, but it's the second time that it's crashing a 220 go files package copy. I ended up doing it with rsync, the copy is still going on ( it will take a long time ) but I'm left with a Zombie Computer where I can't open a finder, and every Application that use it to open some file is crashing itself.

Is there a way to manually relaunch it ( I don't want to reboot, my computer is stuck backing up a lot of files ) ? I tried Sudo Launch the Finder from /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS with no luck, any help would be appreciated.

Just to prove what total garbage the GUID suggestion from the Apple tech was I have done the following:

1) I took a brand new, unused Freecom 1TB FW 400 external HD from my stock. This comes from Freecom pre-formatted as Mac-APM. I reformatted it as GUID with a single partition.
2) I did an archive reinstall of SL onto my worst affected machine, my iMac and re-updated to 10.6.2. with the package update.
3) I checked the Freecom HD integrity with Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and Tech Tools - all OK
4) I tried to run a back up with Chrono Sync - failed and finder locked
5) I tried to run clones with Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner - failed and finder locked

If anything, the external disc is behaving worse GUID formatted than it does APM.

I do wish that these techs would try some of these so called 'cures' before spouting them out over the phone, pretending they know everything. I have recently found the level of technical knowledge of some of the level 2 techs disappointing. The level one techs are just reading off a list and in general, know less about Mac operating systems than my dog.

Wilson:
First -of course I'm sorry to hear of your additional trials w/o success. But I'm sure many right now are thanking you for your diligence and extra effort.

As for "The level one techs are just reading off a list and in general, know less about Mac operating systems than my dog."

Ha-ha! Many would say that comparison is... strangely plausible. LOL! Perhaps, after this matter is resolved, you will find time to put a video on YouTube: featuring your dog demonstrating his/her Mac skills. 😉

*Thank you Wilson for going through the trouble of testing !*

Of course you understand that technically I do not have a real insight into the hierarchy and inner workings of drive and file management vis vi the Finder. And, I believe you understood that from my end, I was trying to help - and relay information I did believe sounded like something plausible.

In addition, the Tech, who identified himself as the "Tech Supervisor" (I tried to find out which Level Tech I had gotten...but this is all he told me) - was so entirely convinced that this was _without question_ the issue... that, in my haste, I rushed the info on this discussion ASAP to share with the rest.

As far a Mac knowledge is concerned, my dog knows:

1) Mac remote controls don't taste good but it is certainly worth giving them a good chew, just to check

2) When the start up chord goes off and my stupid master has forgotten to turn down his attached zigawatt HiFi system, it is absolutely vital to run around in circles barking like mad.

You see my dog does know two facts about Macs, which is approximately two more than some of the level one techs that I have been speaking to recently.

I don't have anything to add to this other than another name and another post to keep this issue near the top of the lists. My issues seem to come from trying to access external drives, just like most other peoples. In may case a remote afp mount is the latest culprit, or at least the last thing I tried to do before the crash.

My dog is a level 2 tech-dog. As well as the remote control tastiness issue, and the duet with the start up chime, she has learnt that jumping against the desk nudges the mouse, which causes the screen to wake up, which she then stares at waiting for the saver to kick in. She watches that for hours, which is pretty much almost all I am doing with my MacPro at the moment.

I have Snow Leopard installed on my Computer ( *enter computer info here* ). The Finder randomly crashes / freezes. It seems to be related to when my external drive is connected. It occurs randomly and inconsistently. Sometimes it will happen when waking from sleep (but not always). Sometimes it will happen when attempting to save a file (but not always). Sometimes it will happen while doing a Time Machine background backup (but not always).

When it happens, I cannot relaunch the Finder. it says "The application Finder.app can't be opened.
-10810". Other programs I have opened may or may not work at this time. But when the Finder "freezes" I cannot save any open work. It seems as if there may be an issue with any program that needs to use the Finder's ability to manage data on directories.

The only solution is to do a hard shut down (holding the power button)
or unplug the hard drive - which results in the finder "springing back to life"... but this is obviously not an acceptable solution for me.

I have tried installing Snow Leopard from scratch, and I have done a number of reinstalls, updated all my software updates - and this did not seem to remedy anything even when no additional 3rd party software is installed. This problem never occurred with Leopard. And I was using the same / similar hardware setup.

There is a thread in the Apple Discussions forum,
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2135129&tstart=0
Which has almost 40,000 views, so it is obviously an INHERENT problem with Snow Leopard.

Please contact me immediately. I would like to make Apple aware of this problem. And I would like to know what can be done or is being done to address this problem.

Sincerely,

Alfred,

Apple are aware of this issue, as the tech's have been getting the problem themselves and I have been sending them syslog and capture data files for weeks. If they say they are not aware of it, they are lying or covering up, because they don't have a clue how to cure the issue and don't want to admit they have sold a faulty product. Remember Apple have been at the receiving end of class action suits in the past (iPod screens etc) for selling and continuing to sell a known faulty product. I have however done as you suggested and raised this as another case. They now have three cases open for me on this issue. I was only getting this issue on wake from sleep but now I am getting it all the time, virtually as soon as I connect an external FW drive.

The finder in 10.6 is a new finder (no longer the Carbon based finder that was in all previous Mac OS X). I'm surprised that this seems to be one of the few issues that is showing up with the new finder after such a major rewrite.

Saying that, this is still an annoying problem, and in my case I know which disk caused it (a 4 GB USB stick) removing it did not resolve the issue, and there was no ghost mount left behind. So I'm going to try a logout then log back in, if that doesn't do it, then a full system restart.
I wasn't even transferring files to the USB stick when the finder locked up. The disk had just been mounted, and I was browsing the disk to clear up some space. Tried to force a finder restart, which did quit the finder, but generates the -10810 error when you try to relaunch it. (I checked for any unusual programs running, none found, other programs I do have running can access my hard drives without any problems doing saves & opens, even the dock continues to operate normally)

Likely the only permanent solution to this issue would be part of an update to the OS itself, 10.6.3 hopefully.

My version of this problem manifested itself in attempting to open a file dialog window via a web browser (Firefox, Safari, etc). Inevitably, I would get the spinning beach ball of doom and a relaunch of the Finder would result in the -10810 error.

After weeks of rebooting, re-installing SL (not a clean install though), etc, I finally just pulled the USB plug on my external Time Machine HD. Suddenly, everything came back! Finder restarted. Browser recovered. It was amazing! 🙂

I'm still wary, though, of completing my upgrade through to 10.6.2. :P

Wilson,

I got your message before it was removed. I suggest people here SUBSCRIBE to this thread - that way, everyone can be kept "in the loop" of what is or what is NOT going on.

I do understand why that message was not allowed (not surprised). But I would again like to ENCOURAGE EVERYONE to *OPEN A CLAIM* with APPLE.

This is the ONLY WAY to FORCE THE ISSUE, because, ultimately, we all like apple products and expect them to work as advertised. There is nothing more that needs to be said.

I believe this issue has to due with the MTU settings on your network card set to jumbo. This issue only started beginning for me when I went into the advanced setting of my network adapter and manually changed the setting to 1000baseT, full-duplex, MTU of Jumbo 9000. If I change the MTU back to 1500 I am able to connect to network shares just fine.

Both my NAS and my Switch ports are set to 9000 MTU. I am also able to connect to the internet etc just fine.

Whereas this may be the case for those people having the problem triggered by attachment to a network drive, if you had read a bit more of this thread, you would see that many folks have had this issue when using USB and Firewire connected storage devices. You cannot select the data rate for these devices, it is inherent in the protocol.
