Assigning function keys for volume

I have a G4 Mac. I recently purchased a new wired short keyboard. Since I am running OS X 10.4.11 (my 700 MHz processor will not allow me to install 10.5) the function keys do not map correctly. I was able to manually map the some of the keys (brightness, dashboard) to their correct function keys, but I cannot map the sound volume keys. The update keyboard software has no effect on making the correct changes. My question is, what are the increase/decrease/mute volume control names I need to use to assign to the function keys? Increase volume, Decrease volume, and Mute do not work. Thanks.

I know you can do it with iKey because I did at one point.

"iKey is an automation utility, a program that creates shortcuts to accomplish repetitive tasks. In essence, an iKey shortcut is a little program in its own right, but you don't need to know the first thing about programming to create an iKey shortcut. All you have to do is put together three necessary parts of a shortcut: One or more commands that give the shortcut its functionality, a context in which it runs, and a launcher that defines how the shortcut is activated."

iKey wasn't that obvious how to use the first time I used it.

Maybe this will help.

I am leaving out steps like get into iKey editor & add a function by pressing the plus icon.

click on the plus button under function:
Pick a function

pick what key to use. I picked shift f3.

Hi guys,
This seems like the appropriate place to list this.
I've been having some trouble-- I believe water damage caused my Volume Up (f5) key to be inactive. the solution seemed to be to download ikey and re-assign the volume up command to some other keystroke-- preferably, say, fn+f7, or shift+f4 or something.
Unfortunately ikey doesn't seem to be working for me. I get everything set up but when I try to set the keystroke to active it, there's a problem. First of all, it only recognizes modifier keys when I type them plus another key (so, pressing shift won't do anything, but pressing shift+a yields the shift key as a command). Furthermore, pressing fn+f7 registers as just pressing f7, etc... weird things going on. When I actually try to execute the command, nothing happens.
For instance, I tried making the command be fn+f7. This registers in ikey as f7. If I just press f7 I get nothing. If I press fn+f7 I get nothing. I tried the same with f4, and several other combinations. No luck.

When I press the "test" button I get nothing as well. The application context is set to universal. When I first installed ikey i realized I had doublecommand installed, but I uninstalled ikey, uninstalled doublecommand, made sure to delete all the ikey and double command preferences from my library, restarted my computer, and reinstalled ikey. No change.

Any help?
Thanks!

To anyone looking to re-map their volume control keys on a non-Apple keyboard: what solved my problem was a small nifty utility called Spark. It's free and does a great job! Not only allows volume control but lets you do way more and can't beat the price!!! Compare with commercial apps like Keyboard Maestro and your appreciation for that developer will definitely increase 😉

From the utility's download page:
Spark is a powerful, and easy Shortcuts manager. With Spark you can create Hot Keys to launch applications and documents, execute AppleScript, control iTunes, and more...
You can also export and import your Hot Keys library, or save it in HTML format to print it.
Spark is free, so use it without moderation!
