SMB -36 ioErr when opening files

After installing Snow Leopard and connecting using SMB to my network harddive, I am unable to open any of the files on the drive. I can log into the drive fine and see all the files but they are bigger than normal; eg. a 126kb file shows up as 132kb and a 6.91gb file shows up as 7.3gb. When attempting to open any file, Snow Leopard gives me the error: Error -36. Unable to open file. I checked using Windows and all files can be opened without any problems. The harddrive is 1Tb and formatted as FAT32. Any advice?

Couple things I forgot to add.
When I installed Snow Leopard, all settings were set to the default ones (same as Leopard) and the way i connect to the drive is through Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server -> smb://"ip address". I do not know where to check the permissions as disk utility does not see the drive. Another thing that is strange is if I ftp:// "ip address" through safari, this opens up the harddrive in Finder where I am getting the error. When I ftp:// "ip address" in firefox, this opens up the harddrive files within firefox and I can open everything fine. It seems to be a problem/permissions with Finder.

Hi, thanks, but I have perms to read and write and the firewall has no effect.

Just seems like the problem is Finder. If I use TextEdit, say, to write a file, it's fine.

The only error I see that may be related to this in the logs is:

smb_maperr32: no direct map for 32 bit server error (0xc00000e5)

Searching suggested this might be to do with the time on the server, but that is set correctly.

Hi all, some part of my post on another mac site:

---
A NAS drive running Samba 3.0.6 does not work correctly anymore:
Copying files to NAS with Finder: OK
Copying files to NAS with cp: OK
Copying files from NAS with Finder: Error, "Unknown Error - 8084", truncated file of length 1032192 bytes (=0xFC000) left at destination
Copying files from NAS with cp: Damaged file at destination, exactly 65536 (=0x10000) byte too short, NO ERROR, return status 0!!!

Another samba server (3.0.33) appears to work OK.
There were also some NFS issues I have look at again, possibly only in Terminals, not when using Finder, but have to recheck to be sure.
---

Yes, 3.0.6 is old, but at least with Tiger (never bothered to install 10.5) it worked with no problems. For the 3.0.33 and 3.0.6 difference, I will compare the smb.conf files on both sometime (after I moved SL to an external hdd and went back to Tiger for gasp work).

It is all pretty strange: diff e.g. says the same file on local hdd and share differ - but if i use md5 on them, the md5 sum is the same. So the SMB problems cannot just be Finder issues but more probably somewhere deeper in the libraries.

Opening files with e.g. VLC or even the new Preview for movies etc works.

to recap:

I cannot copy from Mac SL to an OpenSolaris ZFS shared via smb. Get the -36 error.
I can delete files via Finder
I can create new folders via Finder
I can copy via Terminal
Perms etc look good on the file copied via Terminal from Mac and doing an ls -V on the Solaris box. I can read and write according to perms.
That file, when viewed in Finder cannot be opened, but can be played in the "Get Info" preview box
I can drag the greyed out file into iTunes
I can change metadata on that file via iTunes (i.e. write to the file)
I can play it through iTunes and AppleTV
I can write a file via TextEdit, for example, and it all looks good.
I can mount, read, copy, play from my MacBook on 10.5.8.
The time on my Solaris box had slipped to more than 5 mins from the time on my Mac, so I updated that. Can cause issues apparently.
I've turned the firewall off. No change.
Only error I can see in the Mac logs that might be related:

smb_maperr32: no direct map for 32 bit server error (0xc00000e5)

I found this:

http://spiralbound.net/2005/09/22/macintosh-finder-copy-to-samba-share-problem

Says that he set posix locking = no on his smb share and it was all good.

Will give that a go.

I was having a similar problem but looking at the get INFO I noticed there is a check box for shared folder. On checking this box for shared folder I can access the drive and all is now working well!

Thing is I'm not sure whether this box was checked prior to the SL install and may have been reset (unchecked) during the install process.

I do not have that option. When I get info under the Sharing & Permission I only see "You can read and write: but no check box.

I am also experiencing trouble with my network music drive. It worked flawlessly with OS 10.5 just yesterday. After upgrading to OS 10.6, it will not display the contents of my itunes folder (on the network drive).

My entire itunes library is stored on the network drive. I would access it by option clicking the itunes icon and selecting the itunes library on the network drive. Now, itunes crashes when I try to do this. Please help
