It's a 10.6 related issue. If you have 10.5.X you should have color.

    Location: Germany
    Config: MBP (2007) 2,4Ghz, 8600M GT
Adapter: DVI -> S-Video Adapter (Thomson Television)

After the Update from 10.5 to 10.6 i had the same Problem: Horizontal Rainbow Gradient/distorted Picture.

My Solution: I test with an borrowed (same) Adapter from my friend and i had a perfekt Picture.
The difference between the Adapters: His Adapter is marked with the Word "PAL" (between the Connectors).
It seems: Apple sells different Connectors in Germany!

So, now i try to get an replacement from Apple or ASP.

We're not talking about horizontal rainbows or distorted pictures in this topic. It's about _black & white_, as stated in the topic-title.

Think before you speak, read before you post.

    I know that.

    Done.

I had different outputs incl. the topic "black & white" - it changes randomly (most of i see the distorted picture)

If it is the same problem then there's no hardware solution to solve it. So if the cable you ordered is gonna fix this, we're talking about different problems.

The Black & White thing is a Snow Leopard software related bug.

    Thank you Apple!

Seems this is a very good update. Haven't read any problems yet.

Totally stoked to confirm that 10.6.3 solves this issue for me too. Plug my Early 2008 Macbook Pro 17" into TV, then unplug, sleep it, wake it up, and then plug it in again - still color. No more black and white. Cheers, Apple.
