When downloading video files using Downloadhelper plugin within Firefox, my laptop screen goes blank (black). The mouse can still be seen as a grab hand. All keyboard attempts to close browser do not work and I have not managed to get out of the blank(Black) screen at all. Requires a computer reboot. Disable Downloadhelper and I do not get the blank screen when playing the videos.
Now this sounds like its a plug-in issue BUT read this this reply from the Downloadhelper tech team and the linked thread:
"Someone else also reported this issue, but it is unlikely to be solved from the DownloadHelper code: we only use standard Firefox calls to perform our operations".
I also have this issue when downloading flv files. What has worked in terms of recovering the screen is to press Cmd + Esc (this will show the Front row Media screen)... wait for it. When the Frontrow screen appears press Esc to go back to the video.
I am experiencing limited success with this since the black screen occasionally reappears. If this presents more problems I will dig into the system logs for clues. If I skip downloading videos I do not have a problem. I have also tried running videos in Private Browsing mode on Firefox with the same results.
There's always an alternative....I am using Folx for mac....it's working pretty well downloading the stuffs for me.

Macs are still computers....made up of circuit boards and so on. Mac simplifies the ease of use. We can't expect 100% from everything...do you? That's why this discussion forum have users from everywhere to help one another.
As for all the problems, can anyone provide a error console as a reference before we start jumping to conclusions that "It's a Mac fault"?
This happens to me, and I can tell you its NOT download helper. I don't have this app installed.
It only happens when I try to convert a video using Quicktime Pro or Adobe Media Converter, and only when I'm converting to an flv file. No other file format has this issue.
This is ONLY since installing Snow Leopard. I think it is a quicktime issue. I also have flip for mac installed, and I'm going to try and disable it and try again.
I can reproduce this black screen error using the following applications:
Adobe Media Player (powered by Adobe Air)
Toast 9 (Most recent version)
In Adobe Air, open a large FLV that's been partially downloaded. Skip halfway, try to go back. Black screen.
In Toast 9, find yourself a VIDEO-TS folder that you want burned to a DVD. With the appropriate options in Toast for burning VIDEO-TS folders, proceed with the burn. The screen will 'minimize' to it's usual burn progress window, and then it'll black screen.
What's even stranger is, I have three displays. Adobe Media Player only ever crashes the middle display as I can continue to work on the other two.
Toast on the other hand, crashes the far left display (that's powered by a completely different graphics card than the other two).
Just came across this problem today using Downloadhelper, but from reading the above posts, it clearly has something to do with FLVs and Snow Leopard.
Only my MBP screen went out as my second monitor continued to work fine. I was able to get out of the black screen by disconnecting my second monitor and reconnecting it, but people have already listed several easier methods above. (Activating the screensaver, flipping to negative colors, starting Front Row, etc.)
Happened to me while downloading a .flv file from someone via Yahoo Messenger , the download was to "Desktop" ... happens 3-4 seconds after the download starts.
Maybe it has something to do with some Adobe component and not SL ?
I just experienced the same exact issue a couple times: Black screen except for the curser.
In each instance I was downloading .FLV files using Firefox and DownloadHelper. As has already been mentioned this does not necessarily mean DownloadHelper is the culprit.
Many people are experiencing this problem while using DownloadHelper, but not in EVERY case. Which leads me to believe the problem has a deeper source, possibly QTKitServer, but at this point it's hard to say.
In any case, I'm certainly relieved to know that there is nothing wrong with my Mac, and the large amount of people experiencing this issue should help motivate a quick solution, once it's been determined exactly where the problem originates.
It's good to have a place like this where I can immediately access info about any problem I'm having. (With my Mac : )
We may be closing in on the source of the "black screen" problem.
Others have mentioned getting the black screen while downloading to either the Desktop or to a folder which is open at the time of the download. In both cases the file is visible in the Finder, so your Mac will attempt to create preview thumbnails of the video on the fly, (before the download is complete).
As previously mentioned in this thread, the problem can be avoided by downloading the videos to a closed folder, so no preview is needed until the download is finished. This workaround did work in my case.
So if this preview issue is the source of the black screen bug, that would explain why the problem also occurs for people who are NOT using DownloadHelper. It may indeed be an issue with the way Snow Leopard handles .FLV previews.
Does anyone have any new info that confirms or rejects this idea?
For what it's worth, the same thing happens to me when I use Downloadhelper on Firefox 3.5.5. I thought that my mac actually caught a virus when it initially happened! But it happens for me when I try to download a flv to my desktop. My screen goes black and I can only maneuver my mouse until I have to force a reboot. Performance of Macs are slowly slipping...I hope Apple attends to this.
I have the same problem. Control, Option, Command and 8 fixes it indeed. But I just got it back from apple service and they changed the logic board. It seems it was not that problem at all as we thought before.
And I do not use firefox, I do not download flv. So this is absolutely not a software related issue. What should I do now?
Sometimes it happens more than 5 times within an hour. I was burning a dvd and compressing an ISO file to xvid when it happened last.

I too have this issue with .flv files. Seems to me like the GPU just switches of for some reason, because the system doesn't crash. If I put my Mac to sleep and wake it up again, the screen comes back on.
I love how upset some people are getting at a plug-in. Specifically, a plug-in that allows one to download videos AGAINST the will (usage rights) of the hosting website. Be all end all, is that you are not supposed to be able to download these videos at all. Thanks to a handy plug-in, we can. It's a bummer the screen goes black. It's a bug, and I am sure they will work to fix it. Why would they want to have buggy software out there...
Getting mad at the developer and wanting to sue them is like wanting to sue Lexus because you stole a car and crashed it. Calm down and rethink your priorities in life...
Hey guys 🙂
I faced today the same problem for the first time (which is strange, 'cos I've been using SL daily since 29th August). At first I didn't know what to do, so I closed the lid, opened after successfuly going to sleep mode and everything was back and running. Then I googled the issue and found this thread. I checked the Front Row solution and it worked great. Then I started testing and testing, checking the Console, because I found the certain thing, causing the black screen everytime I liked, which was downloading any FLV video tutorial from gotoAndLearn (
http://www.gotoandlearn.com) website - so the older one (new one are MOV and everything's ok), by clicking DOWNLOAD button with Option key down, saving straightly to Desktop. 100% blackout :P Cmd+8 helping all the time.
So, with this possibility to test it, I found that every black screen causes saving crash report for QTKitServer version ??? (???) to user logs. And only this. I checked the report and it had something to do with Perian.
Once again I googled the thing by searching for "Perian" and "QTKitServer" and first match revealed the ticket to Perian devs with description of the same issue (
http://trac.perian.org/ticket/446). User cheungpat wrote there something that caught my interest: "QTKitServer only crashes when Perian.component is in /Library/QuickTime. If I remove Perian.component QTKitServer doesn’t crash again."
And it turned out to be true. Without Perian.component my 100% blackout turned to 0%.
Other informations provided by cheungpat in his ticket tells that he was using 1.1.4 Perian component (so the latest) on 10.6.1.
I have 1.1.4 also, but 10.6.2 at the same time, so it looks like general 1.1.4 vs Snow Leopard Perian's issue.
Now stop blaming Firefox's plug-ins and start praying for Perian devs to fix the issue and release new update 😀
