I am having spontaneous logouts while I am in Snow Leopard. This is happening a couple times a day and it is very annoying. When it logs out it instantly goes to a blue screen and then the login screen appears. When I log back in all my apps have quit and it is like I am logging in for the first time. I did have this happen in Leopard too, but very rarely.

Here are some facts that may help:

MacBookPro5,1
Bluetooth on : apple mouse, keyboard
Network, wired ethernet
Connected to external monitor via mini display port.
All software patches up to date.

Anybody else experience this problem? Any suggestions.

MacBookPro5,1, Mac OS X (10.6), 4 GB memory

and you are using an admin account?
does it happen in other admin accounts?

Yep using an admin account. I just decided to go back to a wired keyboard/mouse and have turned off bluetooth to see if that makes a difference.

Looks like the Window Server crashed.

Is there any helpful output in Console.app at the time of the "Logout"?

I'm getting this too, except that after the brief blue screen, it drops me back on the desktop with all my apps closed, as if I just booted up.

FWIW, so far it's only happened twice, both times while I was switching from one email address to the next in the geriatric AOL program that they discontinued a year or two back.

Try repairing the disk and permission from the SL disk

    Hi,

I'm having the same problem. After upgrading to Snow Leopard I am finding that spontaneously I will be instantly logged out of the computer. Upon logging back in, I find the computer as if I had restarted the computer.

    My Mac:
    MacPro 4,1 2009 Model
    2x Quad-Core Xeon @ 2.26 GHz
    16GM Ram
    All software patches applied
    Using OS X 10.6

My initial research is starting to show that the cause most likely is with Microsoft Excel v.X.

Anyone want to help me figure out the problem. I'm an advanced OSX user but probably can't fix the problem alone. But I am willing to answer questions and help diagnose this problem.

*I looked in the Console Logs and found the following notes during the time of the last unexpected logout. I'm starting to think Excel is crashing the WindowServer*

I have repaired the disk, turned off bluetooth, etc. I think the problem stems from hooking up the laptop to an external monitor. I haven't checked Excel or the console logs but I have not encountered the problem in several days and I also have not been attached to any external monitor.

    I'm having the same issue.

So I've been able to reliably repeat the problem and cause the crash... <sarcasm>yea for me!</sarcasm>

Anyways here are my simple steps to crash the comp

    1. Start the computer
    2. Open Microsoft Excel v.X (not 2008)
    3. Type in a couple numbers into a column of cells
    4. Start the chart wizard
    5. Try to select the cells that the graph should use
    6. Voila! Crash Heaven

I'll combine my thread with this one for the same apparent crash. Although I run Excel 2004 I don't have external monitors/keyboards/etc (simple 2.16GHz MacBook Pro with 2GB/500GB HDD).

    Hey there,

I just had the same problem and found this thread.

MacBook Pro - 2.53 Intel Core 2 Duo
    Snow Leopard 10.6
    No external monitor
    Running a wired keyboard

I was running Entourage 2004, along with PowerPoint, Pages '09 and Safari.

No indication of a problem. Just a blue screen flash, and then suddenly a login screen.

    Sorry - one other detail.

I was in the admin account when it crashed and kicked me out.

Just had the same thing happen, 2.2ghz macbook pro, running on batteries with only an ipod touch plugged in.

I'm having the same issue. Apple BT Keyboard, Microsoft BT Notebook Mouse 5000. The only similarity I can find is that I'm running Entourage 2004. I've had other apps open like Smultron, Mail, iChat, Photoshop, and Safari. I have auto-login, so it was basically logging me out and back in. I originally thought the GPU was changing at random, but the last time it happened, I made sure the GPu hadn't changed.
