TomTom - Does this App use connection to the internet?

Both the iPhone 3G and 3GS have a dedicated GPS receiver independent of the cellular data networks. The iPhone uses Location Services to determine your location. Location Services uses available information from cellular network data, local Wi-Fi networks (if you have Wi-Fi turned on), and GPS. That's called AGPS (A for assisted). The assistance helps the GPS locate itself faster, but it will still locate itself quite nicely using GPS alone. There is no charge for using GPS. http://www.gps.gov/

If you have the original iPhone with the aluminum back, you don't have a GPS receiver and the TomTom app will not be useful for you.

Cam you 100% confirm that you can switch off the data on the phone and use the TomTom app? I tried calling apple and TomTom but no one could give me a straight answer.

WiFi is off on my iPhone and I put it in Airplane Mode. Takes a lot longer to find a GPS signal but it works and I was able to plot a route to my sisters house.

Remember that TomTom does NOT show your elevation! (as ALL other Nav systems do).

TomTom will not let you set the zoom level (as ALL other Nav systems do).

I'm amazed that you got a GPS signal at all with the GPS receiver turned off. "When airplane mode is on... No phone, radio, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth signals are emitted from iPhone and _GPS reception is turned off_, disabling many of iPhone’s features." Page 137 of the User Guide.

I cannot confirm this in my personal experience as I have not used it outside my home carrier's area, thus data roaming is not a factor.

However, all the map data is contained within the app and GPS reception does not require an internet connection.

Hopefully, a European user will chime in with their experience with the app.

You are correct, it computed my route based on my last known location. But it did not have to access any internet data to do so, so it stands to reason it does not utilize the net to operate.
