RAM for MBP 17" 2.6 GHz
I installed 4GB RAM but the MBP only recognizes/indicates that it is running on 3GB. 2.6 GHz. Hard to believe it maxs out at 3GB!!!

It's possible that you have either a defective stick of RAM or that you were shipped a 1 GB stick instead of a 2 GB stick. See which slot shows the 1 GB. Then swap the RAM sticks and see if the 1 GB moves to the other slot. If it does, contact the seller about an exchange.
