Network Discovery

I'm going to try one more time.

Please don't ask me if I have my share on, firewire settings and what are the window settings, etc. It's starting to be like a big circle of hellish dejahvue.

Right now I'm perturbed with the lack of answers.

For the 100th time this is my problem.

I can share fine and connect to computers "manually (Please remember those words) "BUT" I have to manually use connect to server because shares are not shown on a local network of window systems. The mac is fine detecting other macs in a reasonable time (still slow) but will not or sometimes show windows systems. OS X will not pick up netbios discovery signals very well and at times it is extremely slow to detect and sometimes it will never discover other windows systems before a a network session is complete.

bah enough.

I have the same problem. Sharing actually WORKS, if I click GO->Connect to Server I can of course connect to my windows Shares. However, this only works with IP addresses.

If I try to use Computer Names then there's no way this will work.

I would like to have my windows machine show up Automatically in the Finder sidebar.

Currently I have 2 Notebooks (1 MBP 2007 + 1 MB Unibody) and the iMac. All of them running Snow.

It used to work just fine before but something is keeping OS X from detecting Windows peecees...

Thank you.

Like I've said this is not a share issue or a how to network. There is a problem with the mac not being able to discover and show shared resources in the finder or I should say it's not 100%. I have not found anything that would remotely resolve the issue. It's not a question of firewall settings nor network setup within the OS.

I did call tech support for a case number and they are working on it, it has been 3 days, must be an OS issue and the macbook pro. While I wait I thought I might as well try once more on the forum. Hopefully someone might shed some light on the issue. I have my doubts. I just didn't want the same "have you checked share" answer. I thought I would help save bandwidth. 🙂

Greetings,

I think I understand you, but I'll summarize my networks. I Manage an Active Directory Network, and if I go to the Finder > Go > Connect to Server > Browse > pick one of dozens of servers, Mickey Soft and Apple > Double click the server with the "Share" I want > Put in my credentials for the network > I will see all of the shares.

That's just using 10.6.0, as it comes. Your DHCP server should supply all the necessary network info, DNS, WINS, etc. If you use Static IP addressing, you will need to add the WINS, DNS, etc.

If you want the "Share" to load at boot time, drag the folder to your Login Items window in System Preferences > Accounts.

Works fine as rain. I hope this is close to what you were trying to do. It works the same for me on my home network, albeit, my home network is a mini version of this one, at the College.

Cheers,
M.

I am having the same problem. Sometimes the other computers just show up and sometimes it doesn't show up at all. On my other windows laptop and desktop, the both can see all the computers that has been shared on the network, including the MacBook Pro I am using. Only the MacBook Pro can't see any of the other computers in the network.

I think the one solution I know of is to restart my MBP, but I don't want to do that everytime I need to access a file on another computer.

Really hope for a better solution.

Your problem is very common under snow. At first my shares did not show up under shared in finder windows. I, then, of course, used connect to server to connect to the shares--both Mac and PC. I found that the more I kept the shares active the more likely they were show up under shared. Then, I discovered that if I kept the computers from sleeping during the period access they would tend to stay in shared without nearly so much keeping the connections active.

I forgot to mention one other possible fix--that might take the place of the rest. I have not tried this approach. You can elect to show mounted items on your desktop. Do that and connect to each share. Then, go > users > unlock > + login options > try dragging the mounted shares to the login item window. Try at your risk; I have not tried this solution.
