Snow Leopard not yet ready for use

I installed OS 10.6 on Saturday, only to find that most other software programs are simply not compatible, especially VMware Fusion, which allows me to operate the windows operation system on the Mac. I have contacted Apple, and several other software companies, and they all tell me it may be a month or more before the required patches and up-dated versions will be available. If you have not yet loaded up Snow Leopard, DON"T! It may be a great system once the rest of the world is ready for it, but right now it has rendered about half of my computer useless. By the way, ALL of my programs are up to date, within one year.

I don't know what other software you use, but VMWare Fusion 2.0.5 has been fully tested and is Snow Leopard compatible, but only with the 32-bit kernel (which unless you changed it yourself, you are using).

Well, many people around here have installed VMWare Fusion, and most of them are reporting it works just fine. This is true on other forums and Apple related sites as well.

VMWare FUsion does not work with the 64-bit kernel, which is probably what they were talking about.

VM Fusion works just fine in 32 kernel.. It will not work in 64 kernel yet. SL boots by default to 32 unless you forced it into 64 by holding the 6 and 4 during boot up. Most software programs are not compatible with 64Kernel yet. Don't confuse yourself with 32bit and 64 bit and 32 or 64 Kernel. Remember 32bit and 64 bit run just fine on 32bit kernel and that is where the advantage is at this point.

Thanks for your advice, captain 2-post.

Most programs are compatible. Not all are, however. If you are uncomfortable living on the "bleeding edge," then perhaps installing an OS on the weekend it ships isn't the best idea. Because, while Apple and the software vendors do their best to be ready in time, there are inevitably incompatibilities. There are literally tens of thousands of applications out there, and many of them work just fine in the hundreds of thousands of configurations that are tested pre-release. However, there are some combinations in the billions of combinations out there that do break, and you've found some. They will be resolved shortly enough.

If, perhaps, you had some more specifics, we could offer assistance. A blanket "Don't upgrade" is a crock of hooey.
