Mail was unable to save the attachment

After installing leopard I cannot open any attachment. I get this error on every email I get with an attachment: Mail was unable to save the attachment “image.jpg” to disk. Verify that your downloads folder exists and is writable.

Of course I checked my downloads folder exists and is writeable, I even tried creating a new folder and get the same error.

Obviously something with the Leopard install because I was downloading attachments right before that.

Please help!! I can't download any of my clients email attachments!!

Just to be clear here - I guess you all can send the message with its .doc attachment even though you can not view the attachment by clicking on it in the Compose window. This is how it works for me.

In Mail Preferences/General what is selected with regard to the Downloads folder?

Have you tried rebuilding you Mailboxes yet?
What about an OS reinstall?

I do not have a folder entitled "Mail Downloads" on my entire computer. I just have the normal "Downloads" folder.

User/Downloads is selected. It and "Other" are the only options.

I tried this by sending myself a jpeg from another account and then using quick look, but no Mail Downloads folder was created as a result.

When using Mail: Since upgrading to Snow Leopold I am also unable to open an attachment that had been attached in the Compose window, while still composing? Is there a fix yet for this?

What version of Pages and iWork do you have? Text Edit should be able to open any Word doc file, including .docx, btw.

Made no difference for me. Still can't open a Word attachment, even in a plain text message.

Seems this issue is fixed following the Snow Leopard 10.6.2 update.

Yup, me too. Thanks for the alert. As a bonus, a more serious problem with my Exchange account mailbox also seems to now be resolved.
