Disk Utility DVD+R DL Burn Error..Please Help

I am trying to burn my backup image of Retail OS X Leopard 10.5.6 onto a DVD+R DL so that I can re-format my macbook because I have been experiencing some issues lately. The image is verified but about half way through the disk writing process, it says that it is finishing the burn, closing the disk, and than I get an error.

I have tried to burn the image on 2 different brands of disks wondering if that may be the issue (Verbatim and Memorex), but I am still having problems. My macbook is about a year old so I'm hoping that its not a hardware issue because the drive works for everything else.

I'm hoping that someone can help me figure out how to get the leopard image on a dvd since disk utility is not working properly. I also have an external usb hard drive, but I'm not sure if I can use that to boot my macbook with??

Here is the disk utility log excerpt:

Lyssa,

I am certain as I have done this before, just can't remember where I placed my original disk so I created a backup image on my external HD for times like this.

HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:

Firmware Revision: BP10
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

Hi Kappa,

I'm having the exact same problem using:

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:

Firmware Revision: KA14
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

I get the same read out of messages you posted earlier, it ruins each Imation DVD+R DL 8.5GB disk i tried, writes a tiny line...

i've tried using 2.4x speed as well, no succes.

please let me know if you've found a solution.

thanks

I'm having the same issues. I've tried using 4different brands of DVD+R DL disks on a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E which supports the disk type (-R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW). It burns other disks fine and the disks it rejects burn fine on other computers. I've gotten a couple different error messages, like laser power calibrations failed, verification failed, etc etc.

I don't want to have to pay my local Apple Genius to look at it, but I don't really have any other options.

Just curious, has anyone gotten their DL DVD drive to burn a DL DVD?

I had the same problem about six months ago. Took my Macbook to the genius bar and they replaced the cd drive. Got the computer home and the same problem. Took it back and they replaced the drive again. This time it worked until now. It is starting to fail on burns again. Thats three drives that have had the same problem. I'm now looking for a different brand of superdrive to install. I won't go through the trouble again of putting another Matshita UJ-867 drive in my computer. I don't burn discs very often, but when I do I want it to work.

Ok I have been experiencing the same issue when trying to create a back up copy of my retail version of MAC OSX Leopard. What I have finally figured out is that you need to create the copy from a image with a .cdr extension. I don't know the details but it works. I blew through too many DVD+R DL disk than i am comfortable with.. they're **** expensive. So this is what I did:
-First create a new image with the disk utility app in your Utilities folder.
-under the format drop down menu, choose "Master DVD, CD". Encryption set to None.
-after you have created the image, then go back to Disk Utility and select the .cdr image that you just created and select Burn. Place a DVD dual layer into the mac and i chose the slowest burn speed.. (2.4). it should burn flawlessly.
Good Luck and hope that helps!

I too am having the same problem trying to burn things on DVD+R DL disks. I'm down to my last one and I don't want to waste it. The only thing I haven't tried is blowing compressed air into the CD drive, and I don't know if that's going to fix it or not. Slowing down the write speed only caused the burn to fail earlier. It almost worked once at 4x speed...the entire thing burned and was going to completion and when it did, it spit out an error (failed to verify or something, it was a while ago, I can't remember) but the disk will not be read by the computer.

I am having the same issue, first started after the upgrade to Snow Leopard.
HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N drive, error is The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.

Unsuccessful at every attempt to burn dual layer DVD, single layer burns OK. Never had an issue before upgrade, worked flawlessly. Pulled out a backup HDD with 10.5 installed, the problem still exists. Loaded 10.5 on a new HDD, still exists, wiped that drive, did a fresh load of 10.6, again, the problem still exists. I looked at the log and it looks like it is a buffer overrun error of some type, but really not sure. It does appear that either there are mass failures of these drives, or that there may have been a firmware or some other update that changed the drive to create the problem. I am not quite ready to spend the $150 to replace the drive, as I am out of Applecare, I think I will wait and see if there is a magic bullet in a future update that resolves the issue. There are a ton of posts on this exact problem, and it is not hard to locate one using Google if you want to follow up on the issue.
