Q: WiFi trouble since Snow Leopard Upgrade

I was using my dorm's wifi just fine until I upgraded to SL. Suddenly, although airport picks up the identifies the network, I am unable to use it. All I get is a "connection failed" message. As far as I know there is no password required, as I have not been prompted to enter one. Any suggestions? Anyone else having this trouble since upgrading?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.6)

    Try another WiFi hotspot.
If it works there, then you know your dorm has a router which needs upgrading.
If it doesn't work there, then you know you might have some configuration issue with your computer.

If you don't have a solution for bjmankoff, please start a new topic thread here:

    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1171&start=0

You'll get a wider audience, and won't confuse bjmankoff with solutions that don't apply to them. Wireless issues can be any of the following*:

    http://www.macmaps.com/WIFI1048.html

Trying to isolate 30+ issues with one person is daunting enough. Add extra people who don't have solutions to their own problem is going to just add to the confusion.

I had a similar problem at a Dr's office. I did research and found if you go into system preferences; network; airport and then remove the automatic and enter another name and then connecting, the wifi started working.

Actually just going into system preferences; network; airport and edit locations. Add a bogus name and delete the "Automatic" location. Connect to wifi and then you can go back in and delete bogus name and add "Automatic" location back in and it works. Must be a bug in SL.

Same happened to me. Since SL, WiFi went beserk. Didn't connect to any spots I had previously. I did the last thing posted here. I tried your suggestions exactly as worded and also tried changing up the order I did those things, to no avail. Maybe Apple will put out an update soon that will fix this problem. It's too bad because I just bought a battery so I wouldn't have to be tethered to my power chord any more and now I'm stuck to my wall by an ethernet cable!

Make sure your ethernet is disconnected when you do this. Delete the automatic location. Make a name that you want for your dorm wifi. Turn off airport and then turn it back on and then connect to your dorm wifi.

Yeah, that solution still isn't working. Thanks for your help, but I guess my problem lies somewhere else.

I upgraded to 10.5.8 and for me is completely AirPort unusable. I went back to 10.5.6 to have a connection usable!!!

Same thing for me. The 10.5.8 update is the cause. I found a solution that finally worked for me from another discussion here about the same issue.

Set your router to broadcast the signal in G mode only. This solved my problem and others as well. I think most routers are set to broadcast in mixed, B and G, signals by default.

Ok, I have the fix!! After several frustrating days it finally just works.

    The process:
Upgrade your Macs to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Powercycle your modem AND time capsule / airport TWICE
Reset your time capsule with a pin or paperclip on the back
Follow the prompts to setup your time capsule / airport access
    -- On your Macs
    Go to System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > TCP/IP
Click "Renew DHCP Lease" then click "Ok"
    Click Apply
    Turn off Airport
    Turn Airport on

    IT WORKS!!!

One of the magical people at tech support walked me through it earlier today. The whole process took about 1.5 hrs because Show Leopard takes about an hour to install on one machine.

    Hope this helps-
    Joshua
