obscuring objects in live footage, without rotoscoping

Hi guys,
sorry for the cryptical topic title, but here's what I need to do:
My clip features a branded hand-held object (a cellphone), and I need to see if I can obscure it from recognition (at least "reasonable doubt").

My first idea is to do this in Shake, but I would like to turn to Motion instead, if possible:

1) I need to get a track of the object hand. I can do that.
2) I need to match-move a rough mask around the phone.
3) I need to make all black things within that mask, more featureless and blacker, or tint it towards a different color.

I don't want to rotoscope the ting entirely (don't know if that's possible/feasible in Motion); this is why I go for the color replacement/de-contrast operation.

Hope I am getting through to you in terms of what I want to do 🙂
Please. Any tips?

Cheers;

Well. You need two versions of each clip. You can either duplicate the clip or use a clone. Track and mask the top clip and then apply a colorize, levels, color balance, color correct or any of the other color correction filters that you feel will give you the look you want.

Make sure to feather the mask a bit to try and help it not stand out like a sore thumb. You may also want to experiment with blend modes on the top clip.

Hi,
thanks for your reply.

I know about cornerpins etc, have done it in Shake before.
But this footage is not very good for that, and time is scarce...
This is why I was hoping for a solution similar to making selections by color range, like in Photoshop. To be able to NOT affect the skin tones (fingers) and background (white and light blue). It's either that, or tight rotoscoping, which brings me back to the time issue... :-}
