You have likely purchased a ringtone eligible song, not the ringtone.

To buy a ringtone:

Buy a ringtone eligible song
Find it in your library and click the bell icon
The ringtone editor opens.
Edit the ringtone to the portion you want
Click Buy

This service is available in the U.S. only.

You can Google "iphone ringtone" for several free ways to make ringtones from anywhere.

sooooo....if i am in australia and can purchase so called "ring tones" from itunes and be charged for them....BUT cant use them...is that right? have i understood your note corectly? seems a bit odd. Surely they would tell you that yes? i have managed to purchase 2 ring tones in the "ring tone" section of itunes and they only appear in the playlists - so what have i done wrong? and what little bell icon? Cant see where it might be...heeeeelllppppp

Well after 3 hours, I have my ringtones and do credit Apple with a rockin ringtone editor. It's really cool, once you figure it out. Here is how I did it.
1. Purchase a song (looks like you do need to purchase the song first, how clever!)
2. Syn it with your iPhone into the music (iPod)
*I created an folder with music that is goes in my iPod, the key here is making sure that it is downloaded into the iPhone, not just in iTunes
3. Once downloaded to the iPhone the song will show a column with a bell if the song can be used as a ring tone.
4. Now, this is cool, tap the bell and the editor opens up. You can choose any 30 sec. portion of the song and create a ring tone!! Very cool..any part of the song.
5. Now you get to purchase the ringtone for $1.98 (double whammie!) but worth it since it is customized.

Hope this helps, I asked so many people and no one told me that you MUST download into the phone first, then Viola, the bell appears and you can get to the editor. Happy editing!

Correct.

" i have managed to purchase 2 ring tones in the "ring tone" section of itunes and they only appear in the playlists - so what have i done wrong? "

You cannot make/purchase the itunes ringtone. Only in the U.S.

You can however create free ringtones from anywhere. If you Google "iphone ringtone" you will find many free ways to accomplish this.

Figured out i had prev bought a song of a ringtone not an actual ringtone. how deceiving. but thanks to you i am incredibly happy to find out you CAN download ringtones for Australian residents despite what i have been reading. thanks. 🙂
