Downloaded .dmg files will not mount

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I cannot get any downloaded .dmg files to do anything. After downloading them, I double click on them and nothing happens. Nothing. No error message. No bouncing dock icons. Nothing. I've tried downloading them using Firefox and Safari with the same results. This is happening with all .dmg files, not just the same ones, so I know it's not unique to a particular .dmg file.

Any ideas or fixes? Anyone else having this issue?

That's controlled by /System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app. Select a .dmg file, CMD+I, and see what's indicated under *open with.* If not that app, then select it, and click Change all. Now, double-click on a .dmg file and all should be well.

I've now noticed that I cannot open or execute ANY files. If I double click on any icon, the default app will hang when opening, with the icon eternally bouncing on the dock until I "Force Quit" it.

The only way around this is if I first get into the program I want to open them with and manually choose to "Open File..." from the "File" menu.

Is anyone having the same system-wide problems?

Add me to the list with this problem... Fresh install of Snow Leopard. The problem started before updating to 10.6.1.

I first noticed when trying to unrar something. unrarx just jumped for a while, then stopped but didn't do anything. I had to force quit and just sucked it up as a possible unrarx incompatibility.

Shortly after installing unrar via port so I could just extract the rar I needed to, I tried double clicking a zip file and Archive Utility did the same thing as unrarx.

At this point, I loaded up Disk Utility and tried to fix permissions thinking it was something weird like that but only a few Flash files were found. After I was done with that, I updated to 10.6.1 and restarted. Everything seemed to work again for a little while but the problem has come back.

I'm pretty sure this is a finder issue.. I've tried to open various different file types via finder and most of them have the same result. But I am also able to open up the application by itself and open the file from there just fine..

The applications that have stalled for me..

TextEdit, Xcode, Archive Utility, Preview, Firefox, Pixelmator, Transmission

While testing out the various file types, I noticed that some files of the same type would open from a different location.. i.e. An xcode project I have opens fine as well as all the files inside it's folder (png's, .h, .m, .xcodeproj) .. but the same type of files that I just downloaded and tried to open from my Downloads folder hang. Very strange.
