I have a batch of .mov files of which QT only plays the audio (video is blank) - same thing when I try to open in Final Cut Express HD. I am able to open these with VLC player. How do I convert these files so that I can edit them in FCE? I am suspecting maybe these are HD files and the problem is related to that.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

    .mov doesn't mean much. If it open in VLC go to info and report on exactly what it says.

    Hi Tom, thanks for your response. Do you mean info from hitting command+I? There I am told the Kind of file is QuickTime Movie, and the codec is MPEG IMX 525/60 (50Mb/s), Integer (Big Endian), Timecode; Channel count: 1. Does that help? Really appreciate your assistance.

    this is some professional, betacam-based codec, ..
    => not supported by FCE.
    perhaps, FCpro handles it .. ?

    Yes, FCP supports IMX. You need that application to be able to work with this media.

    Thanks for the help - I ended up using the VLC Streaming/Export Wizard to create an mpeg file that I could edit in FCE. But interesting to learn a drawback of FCE to FCP, one not mentioned to me by the Apple sales associate when I was making my decision.

    perhaps, it was 'too self-evident' for the sales-person, that FCE is meant for camcorder-imports with a few consumer formats only, DV (as from miniDV), HDV, AVCHD (=last two get converted automatically to AIC) - done.

    .. in my main area, iMovie, we permanently read, how people are surprised, that those editors are made _by concept_ as camcorder-editors, not 'file-editors' .. Apple/mov='editable by Apple/FCE' is a fallacy ..

    This is a strange twist to this saga. I too have a batch .mov files that were converted from XDcam HD. The shooter put them on my portable hard drive. I brought it home and had a look on my 2.93 GHz iMac. All is well - footage is gorgeous from this camera. I give the drive to my son to edit on his 2.66 Ghz iMac in either iMovie 09 or FCE and the files are black but audio is fine. Both of us have Leopard 10.5.8 and QT 7.6.4. In the QT Library folder we both have Perian and AC3MovieImport.component. Why is it I can play it and he can't? What do I have that he doesn't? Where do I look?

    The shooter has Final Cut Pro. XDCAM is not supported in FCE or QuickTime without Final Cut Studio.

    but, but, but I don't have Studio either. I did discover that somehow I have QT pro and he doesn't. Does Snow Leopard have QT pro? Is this the time to finally upgrade?

    QT pro is not relevant. The codec does not come with QuickTime pro; you need Final Cut Studio to have access to this codec. There may be third party codecs that can read it, and then you'll have to convert it to a format that FCE can use.

    I was discouraged and belwildered by your post but I thank you for it. I couldn't figure out why they would play on my machine and not my son's. Then I noticed that I have QT Pro - maybe got it from a demo of Studio or something. I ran out and got the Family pack of Snow Leopard which has QT Pro and had him upgrade his Mac. Ta Da!! He could play/use/edit the Xcam files in FCE. So just dispel any misconceptions or untruths...

    There is no demo version of FCS. Maybe you have Logic or some other pro app. You can only edit XDCAM material in FCE if you render. Once again QT Pro is not relevant. The codec for XDCAM does not come with QuickTime Pro. No codecs come with QT Pro. Perian is now supposed to have an XDCAM decoder that works with FCE. I haven't tried it. Rather than gloat it would be more helpful for other users if you actually gave the item properties of the clips you're using in FCE and the sequence you're working in.
