MacBook Pro Battery 'Service Battery' after Snow Upgrade

MacBook Pro Battery 'Service Battery' after Snow Upgrade

Way to many people are reporting this to just be failed batteries unless we all got them form the warranty program at the same time. I rather think its an issue with the upgrade.

Note that the KB fix did not help my machine so this needs more trouble shooting.
Any help would be great.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

Same here, went to the app store yesterday but no joy. They confirmed (ifactores) the battery wasn't working as it should, but on doing the battery test it cam out green. Barely green, but still green. This meant the could not exchange it under the warranty.

I Called Apple support to see if they are willing to help me, but that was a big no. The guy said that the equipment is not what is used to be and charging the battery to less (full cycles) will damage it just as much as it would when recharging to many. He also told me I should consider Apple Care... but that wear and tear of the battery was not supported by it...

He mailed me a document that explain the policy of apple when it comes down to Batteries and it says that (after 6 months) the the battery should still be able to recharge and hold a current. if it does that, the battery is seen as working (as long as it passes the test of course).

I asked if they could check for know issues, but they couldn't find one... strange since almost all the problems happen with the same battery type (ASMB012)

Strange thing with me is that the "service battery" is not shown all the time... When it does, the max charge will be below 4200 mAh... My life time is now doen to 1.5 hours...

I've tried resetting the battery and the PRAM, nothing seems to work.. Let's see and wait what apple will do. In the mean time, if you have this problem... report it to apple. If the number of complaints go up, they can't deny it (i hope).

How do you boot into 64 bit mode? Is this a feature on any MBP? I bought mine in late 2007 (December). It would be great if this fixes it. I don't see how Apple could deny this as a problem. My battery worked fine 3 days ago and as soon as I load SL, it doesn't work. I could see if it was just me, but this thread is huge. Thanks to all for any help.

BeCon - Those with capable Macs can hold down the 6 & 4 keys during start up. However, your MBP - like mine - doesn't support this, as it has a 32-bit EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface), rather than a 64-bit EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface). The 64-bit EFI is required to boot into 64-bit mode. More info here:

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/allthat_jazz_32_and_64-bit_macs_efis_kernelsapps/

And all that I just typed, I don't understand a word of it...just that unless you have a much more recent MBP than we do, you can't force Snow Leopard to boot into 64-bit mode.

battery problems here
"genius" at Jax FL says
1) buy a new battery
2) there is no software in the battery to update

Apple Care rep says
1) buy a new battery
2) there IS software in the battery to update
3) no way to tell if the battery has been updated properly since BatteryUpdater.bundle is eliminated in Snow Leopard - perhaps this is the cause of the problems...
4) escalated to Engineering ticket - 3 to 5 day reply

Well my story takes the cake. December 2007 Macbook Pro 17". Service battery message. 26 cycles used. 26% health.

I living in Wichita, so we do not have an Apple Store. We do have an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). They said it would cost me $130 to replace the battery. THE **** WITH THAT. My battery was running like clockwork before Snow Leopard. I'm going back, back in time to the days of Leopard, an OS that gave me battery life and an Automator that didn't crash the computer.

I called AppleCare yesterday as my older mac book pro is still covered but no dice. They say they have not heard of this issue and that since the cycle count on my battery is 300 that I am SOL. Trust me, before Snow Leopard, it was not lasting 3 hours but it lasted long enough for me, like 1.5 hours. Now it lasts 20 minutes.

The only way this gets fixed and someone gets on it is if everyone who is having this issue calls, whether you have AppleCare or not, or else this will continue to be a non-existant issue for them

I in the last day I did and SMC reset, upgraded to 10.6.1, and did a full 'calibration' by draining, waiting, and then fully recharging the battery.... going to take it off A/C now and see if anything improves

Vaughn84 - How easy/hard is it to go back to Leopard? What would need to be done? If this issue does not get resolved, I would like to do the same. Is there anything I need besides my Leopard disk? It's very strange how a company, which I never had a problem with, is all of a sudden pulling crap like this by denying that it is SL and saying it's our batteries. I do not have Apple Care or any of the services but I will call. Does anybody know which number I should call? The regular customer service center or something like that? I am going to an Apple Store now to see what they say. Thanks All.

I don't have Apple Care, but I have Apple stock and believe in the company. I'm going to call Apple Care first, and if things don't get sorted out, I'm just going to use Time Machine to load my last backup, which I made right before installing Snow. I think it'll be a breeze.

Also, I have to mention Automator here since no one will answer elsewhere. It is now completely useless in Leopard. Can someone run a "watch me do" involving Safari or Firefox, set to repeat over the course of about 10 minutes. Then, while it's running, watching a flash video on the web. Doing this at the same time, guaranteed system wide crash on my Macbook Pro. I NEED someone to try this to see if the results replicate. Automator even crashed before stating the workflow, but the above is 100% within minutes.
