Feb 10, 2010 3:49 AM in response to blieuxby sr.richie,As previously posted here, I had the "Service Battery" message like one/two months ago, after upgrading to SL. It disappeared with a battery calibration.
Yesterday, waking up from sleep my MBP (not a hard task, not compiling an app, not rendering a video, not playing videogames, JUST WAKING UP MY MACHINE), ta-daaaa, it appeared again.
Then, with a simple reboot, it has disappeared (no calibration needed, this time).
Gentlemen, for me too it is a CLEAR software problem, not a battery fault. -
Feb 10, 2010 5:00 PM in response to blieuxby MrDave,I too had a "Service Battery Message" again after a SL upgrade. I did several battery calibrations and it still remained. I planned on taking it to an Apple store to check but just seemed to have gone away! The first time saw the problem I had about %80 power left and the whole MPB just shut down. This last week every time I click the Battery icon, it is not giving any indication of an error.
The battery is about 7 mos old and the upgrade is about 2 months old. Sounds like SL SW to me too. -
Feb 12, 2010 4:42 AM in response to blieuxby Alex Martin Ensemble,Will this have any answer from Apple someday soon? I really don't understand why the company is so silent when it is so obvious that their software is causing their "expensive" hardware to die. I never saw nothing like this, even small software producers will acknowledge problems affecting their products and post public updates to keep their users / customers informed that they are working on a solution, I have seen that even on free software products. We are talking about $2000 laptops here... It is a pitty that we are only able to come here and cry our rage out and we don't take some actions against this kind of behaviour. And what's even worse, I suspect that 1.6.3 won't address this issue when it's out.
PD:
By the way, I also suffer shut downs with full power indicator. -
Feb 13, 2010 1:04 PM in response to blieuxby bilotko,Mine is going bonkers too.
Few weeks after I've installed SL the service battery thing came on - at that time, my battery was on 85% health having undergone about 120 cycles. After the warning had appeared, the health was (according to iStat) going from 25% to 75% in weeks - different after every charge. I've done calibrations and stuff but nothing happened - only the health was changing and so did the battery life.
Somewhere after christmas, the service battery warning was gone, replaced by 82% health. And so it was for a month when the warning came back again, with the battery now rated at 63%. I've done two calibrations after that and it was 80% with the warning gone. Six days ago same story, I unplug the computer and the health either rises or drops. Currently it's on 81% but just yesterday, it was on 75% with the warning on.
P.S. I've just unplugged it and it's 82%. See what I mean? -
Feb 14, 2010 4:56 AM in response to blieuxby wazzay2k1,Yeap, im having the same problem.... First started a few days ago, my battery capacity went from nearly 4000 mAh, now down to 2059 mAh.
Ive very disappointed, and lost some faith in Apple products from this experience.
Does this mean ive now go to spend £60+ on a new battery. Not impressed! -
Feb 14, 2010 5:32 AM in response to wazzay2k1by Alex Martin Ensemble,Purchasing a new battery doesn't solve the problem and it will be "killed" in a matter of days. If you aren't impressed by the money that a battery cost, I will impress you: Only solution is getting a new generation MacBook Pro or keep living with your "portable" desktop... -
Feb 14, 2010 5:49 AM in response to Alex Martin Ensembleby Merak,100% true, a new battery won't fix the problem.
my new battery behaves almost like the old one,and it has just 26 cycles..so..the battery is not the problem.
it dropped to 75% of healt already..no good lol -
Feb 14, 2010 6:07 AM in response to Merakby Alex Martin Ensemble,I advice to save your new battery now that is not too late, if you have the old one, use that and wait until a fix is released, if they release it... -
Feb 14, 2010 6:13 AM in response to Alex Martin Ensembleby Merak, yeah, even if actually i don't think about a possible sofware release to fix this! -
Feb 14, 2010 6:14 AM in response to Merakby wazzay2k1,I think im going to hold off for a while, just use the AC to power it up, and hopefully Apple will release a fix for the current tech, instead of this iPad.... thing -
Feb 14, 2010 6:17 AM in response to wazzay2k1by Alex Martin Ensemble,I wont recommend to use your MacBook Pro without a battery at all, the CPU speed will drop down, and I understood battery gives some kind of protection against electrical spikes. -
Feb 14, 2010 6:20 AM in response to Alex Martin Ensembleby wazzay2k1,I heard it was the other way around... when battery is out, the CPU is increased slightly -
Feb 14, 2010 6:31 AM in response to wazzay2k1by Alex Martin Ensemble,Just try running an intensive CPU aplication and you will see what I mean or google for "running macbook pro without battery" and you will see. I'm sure any Apple expert around here will confirm this... -
Feb 15, 2010 12:37 AM in response to blieuxby VCO1,So I reset the SMC and recalibrated the battery twice. And yes, it all seems back to normal now (fingers crossed). The Service Battery warning has gone and battery life seems pretty okay (3+ hours or so).
Hope it will stay like this. -
Feb 15, 2010 2:53 AM in response to VCO1by Alex Martin Ensemble,I wish I could try to recalibrate my battery, but random shutdown wont let me. VCO1, keep us updated about the behavior of your battery, don't want to bring the party down, but I fear that you will get the message again soon.
