Dec 10, 2009 2:38 PM in response to Pankilby mikeyg123,To Pankill:
You say downgrading cured the "replace battery" message, but isn't that message only a feature in Snow Leopard?
Do you have any info on whether your battery health returned to normal after downgrading? -
Dec 10, 2009 3:20 PM in response to mikeyg123by Pankil,mikeyg123
Sorry for the confusion..The messages have gone. I am still not sure about its health. I have downgraded it yesterday and I will update the status in a day or two.

it's my second battery in 12 months!!!!
I'm very upset with Apple, this is unacceptable.
ok, so I've been reading lots of posts in this topic and it's incredible the amount of people with the same problem!!
in addition, two few days ago, I was witness of a black macbook battery explosion! it was over a wood table, and it was very damage. very scary!! since then, i never leave the macbook pluged when i'm not present, and of course, this is the last time i buy one mac laptop.

I have a Macbook Pro (Early 2008) and this is my second battery with the same problem. My battery health has been fluctuating from 60% to 80%+ in the past few days. SMC reset and battery calibration did not solve the problem. I have followed all the proper battery care and maintenance procedures recommended by Apple. My conclusion is that Apple *****.
Either way, I'm just wondering what is killing my battery:
1) Snow Leopard?
2) Magsafe Power Adapter? (makes weird noises)
3) Magsafe board?
4) Apple battery *****?
Cheers,
Fan -
Dec 13, 2009 8:08 PM in response to blieuxby amitobluesky,I started having the same power/battery problems as discribe in this thread. On Sunday I was doing a SMC reset when I noticed that my MBP battery had bulged slightly. This had happened over the past few days as I have had the battery out of the computer a few times over the past weeks trying to fix this issue.
Anyhow, I took the MBP to my closest Apple Service Provider as soon as the opened on Sunday. They made a quick call to Apple support and did a battery diagnostics test (run off a USB dongle). The results came up as BAD BATTERY right off the bat. Thankfully I have Apple Care and the battery is being replaced under warenty - no questions asked.
My MBP is just over two years old and I have always been maticulous with regular battery callibrations. Since upgrading to 10.6.2 the computer has been running much hotter than previously. I wonder if this is having an effect on the batteries?
I sure hope this fixes the "Service Battery" warning and poor performance I've been experiencing recently. -
Dec 14, 2009 2:00 PM in response to netdiggerby thehesiod,I have this same battery and the same problem -
Dec 15, 2009 8:36 AM in response to thehesiodby Jordi Joaquim Recort, add my case to the list,
My battery is new, has only 15 months ( I changed the original one) my macbook pro is a 1,1
before installing SL I had around 3 hours of battery
after SL 40 minutes and the Service Battery message.
I have tried a couple of times the recalibration, but all it's still the same.
I remember that the old powerbooks (in MACOS 9 times) had an app to refresh the battery..
It was an app that fully discharged the battery and then fully charged again...
something similar for MACOSX?

Dec 15, 2009 3:08 PM in response to Jordi Joaquim Recortby hartv,Another bad battery here. I just spoke with Apple Care and they said because there were "no reported problems with this" that I had two options:
buy a new battery or
report the problem to engineering and wait a week to hear their verdict
I informed them that there were numerous people having this issue and it is "reported" all over their discussion boards. I chose to report the problem to engineering to see if they will cover the new battery. We'll see. -
Dec 16, 2009 2:57 AM in response to hartvby CollectedMule,I too have noticed this service battery message just two days ago. I was first drawn to it when I noticed my macbook pro had been charging when it hadn't been used for a while. Oddly enough after using the laptop for 3 hours yesterday (via mains) the battery now reports 100% charged. It's not been 100% charged for well over a year now - nearly always stopping at the 97%/96% mark. I've scanned this topic but I can't see where you go to get the battery stats. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Cheers! -
Dec 16, 2009 3:08 AM in response to CollectedMuleby Jordi Joaquim Recort, under "about this mac" where you can access the Apple System Profiles clicking "more info"..
you can also acccess Apple System Profiler in the Utilities Folder.
on the Power secction of contens you will have the info.
Some folks are also using a third party utility called iStats to check the battery status..
Hope this helps!
(I'm also lost quite often when you find an open thread and participants give too many things as undestood) -
Dec 16, 2009 4:49 AM in response to Jordi Joaquim Recortby jedmtnman, you can also open up the application terminal and type:

System_Profiler

which will output the results of your entire system to the terminal window, you can also type

System_Profiler > ~/Desktop/sys_info.txt

which will create a text file on your desktop that you can copy and paste from. -
Dec 16, 2009 10:12 AM in response to hartvby guguii,hi
it's not new the silence of apple in these problems, they are absolutely irritating.
but some time ago, they accepted this problem!!!!!!!!
so they extended the battery guarranty 2 years more for one change free of charge!!
but this cheap fix has nosense, beause it's obvious that the problem comes from THE MACBOOK
all the MBP with bad batteries have the problem again and again, and you have to buy a new battery every year (with too much lucck)
so, my question is, what can i do to fix his problem??
if I bring the MBP to an apple SAT (i'm in madrid, so no magic apple genius bar around) ¿could they fix my problem??
I mean, i don't want a new battery, i want a laptop wich doesn't kill the batteries
any idea?
thanks -
Dec 16, 2009 10:47 AM in response to guguiiby Johnny Storm,I'm not convinced that the issue is related to the battery, I believe it to be more of a software issue. Some how hibernation has been disabled or corrupted in the recent versions of snow leopard. My computer shouldn't just shut down when the battery glitch happens, but instead should go into hibernation, so something's wrong with the OS IMHO.
It would be nice if Apple acknowledge the problem, wether its software or the battery, it would save them a ton of Genius Bar appointments, that's for sure.
I'm just worried about my new MacBook Pro with the internal battery. I rely too heavily on my MBP to send it out to have the battery swapped. -

Since the day I installed SL I've been having the problem. Called Simply Computing, no Mac Store here on Vancouver Island, and they said they'd never heard of the issue and that it was impossible for software to do this. Told me to come in and buy a new battery. Felt like they "got the memo" and are just pushing battery sales.
