Deleting some of the songs from Ipod (3rd gen.) & adding new MP3 songs???

I bought am Ipod (3rd generation) off EBAY. It came with bunch of songs in it. Can I keep some and erase some of these songs? I don't have any info about the previous user's ID information. I was able to download some MP3 songs from my computer in to Ipod. I can see the songs downloaded in my computer, but they are nowhere to be found in my Ipod when I tried to listen to them using my Ipod. How do I get this nice Ipod start playing my songs? This my FIRST Ipod. Please someone help.. Thanks.

Hello mdugentas,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!

In order to get the iPod to be fully functional, you will have to restore the iPod via iTunes. This will delete the iPod's association with the old owner's library and set it up with yours. Restoring the iPod will delete all the music and files from the iPod and will allow to go through the setup process with your iTunes library.

Keeping the old users music is not an option here because it would be stealing his or her music, which is a no-no on these Apple forums. 😉

Here are instructions on how to restore the iPod via iTunes.

How did you sync these songs to the iPod? The only way this would be possible without restoring the iPod, would be if the old user had "manually manage music and videos" enabled from under the Devices Summary menu that appears when the iPod is plugged in and recognized by iTunes.

Here is some more information on how to sync music to your iPod. It can be of great help.

Hope this helps.

As I said I am new to IPOD. Now, I understand that I can't keep any of the existing songs in the IPOD. Once I delete the songs, I would like to download some of my songs that are in my computer. Can I do this without using I-tunes? I want to use my new IPOD as a MP3 player (if possible) and I don't want to do get involve with a new software such as I-tunes. I would like to keep my computer clean. Thanks for additional help in advance.

The only way to download songs or make use of the iPod as handheld music player is through iTunes or another third party application. So yes, you will have to download iTunes in order to make this work. Sorry.

iTunes is a clean and simple program to use. Just give it a shot. 😉
