admin privileges required and apparently gone ?

I updated to Snow Leopard and found I have to reinstall "Formac Studio DVR", the software for a converter from analog (VHS) to digital video. Apparently one component had disappeared during the update.
Now when I try, I get the message "This installer requires admin privileges to run".
In 10.5 at the most I had to give my password for some kind of actions. Now I do not know how to be recognized as having those "admin privileges".
In the "Help" knowlege base for 10.5, I found an article indicating to apply the "Directory Utility". I cannot find such a thing among my Utilities!!!
Please help.

if it's listed as admin that's all that should be necessary. if it's not working it's likely due to problems with the installer for that 3rd party program not with OS. to make sure, go to system preferences->accounts again, unlock the lock at the bottom and create a new admin account. log into that account and try installing the program from there.

I did what you said, V.K., but it did not work. I switched users but the access to that software was blocked, in spite that I had put in the file "for all users" (since all data for my previous account was blocked with a small round red sign at the bottom with a white stripe in its center). Then I downloaded it again (all the time still within the new Admin account) but could not install it. A pop-up indicating the lack of any of the necessary administrator rights (even stronger formulated than the previous pop-up) prevented me any access. I do not understand it since the new account was created as Admin, as was my previous one.
However he seems to have even much less ⚠ admin rights than the first one...
I am afraid it has to do with the actual rights that my Snow Leopard gives any user even if indicated as an Admin...

Is it possible to install 10.5 in one of my internal drives or in an external drive and switch the OS at boot?

yes, this is possible but you should figure out what's wrong with your snow leopard install. it seems to be seriously messed up. can you install other programs that use installers?

Thank you again V.K. for your kind help.
Yes I could install as a test Corel Graphics Suite for Mac 11 with its VISE installer. It requested first Rosetta which installed without any problem. For the moment only that TVR Studio of Formac demands admin provileges he does find or accept.
I have used the same 10.6 install source in 2 macbooks and the owners of them do not seem to have found any problem (until now). But trying to install TVR Studio in one of them brought the same pop-up asking for admin rights.
I am freeing one of my internal drives and hope it lets me install 10.5 in it without messind my whole system even more. I have never done such a thing before. Thanks again... Edmund

efaron,

Without doubt, you have found a software title that is simply incompatible with Snow Leopard. At least, the installer for the title is incompatible (the software itself might be fine, but that doesn't help you right now).

If you need to use this software right now, your only option is to install Leopard on another volume and use it in that installation. Or, you could remove Snow Leopard and go back to Leopard entirely. Something tells me you don't want to do that for this one app. 😉

Installing Leopard on another drive, or even another partition on the same drive as Snow Leopard, will not affect Snow Leopard in any way. You can boot back and forth by restarting and holding don the "Option" key. The "Startup Manager" will appear, and you can choose your desired OS.

Same problem here: updated to Snow Leopard yesterday, fresh install with a newly (never used) bought FORMAC DVB-T tuner.
When installing the latest installation software (Formac DVB 2.3.1 for Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) & OS 10.5 (Leopard) Universal binary Suitable for Intel Macs & PowerMacs.(08/03/2008))

MessageBox appears: 'This installer requires admin privileges to run.'

Even WORSE happens now to me! An external Iomega USB drive appears under the disk utility with "NO OWNER" mention. When trying to open this hard drive (I see its icon in the desktop) a message saying that this "Alias cannot be opened since the original cannot be found" comes. It says I should either delete this "Alias" or apply it to the proper object. However when trying to apply it to the Iomega Drive this operation is impossible. The hard drive in the list of files (left) appears pale pictured and cannot be clicked. I do not understand what Snow Leopard does but it makes a lot of a mess with hardware working perfectly previously under Leopard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do hope Apple brings soon a service pack!!!

I had the exact same issue while trying to install a third party program ( Punch! Shark FX V5 ) what ended up working out was going to the installerscript.plist for the program (which is contained in the package contents o the installer icon) and editing one line in it. If you look through the installer script for a line that says

<key>Require Admin</key>
<string>TRUE</string>

replace the word true with false then save and try the install again. In order for this to work you must drag the installer onto your hard drive from the opened .dmg the installer comes in. This may help bypass your issue. I hope this ends up helping you or someone out there, good luck.

Okay this happened to me, and I have tried every online option that is known. From new accounts to deleting host files. Still says I need admin privileges. I AM THE ADMIN, I want to install my games and play. Right now I am really upset my husband installed Snow Leopard on my macbook. It worked before he did the install. I WANT TO PLAY MY GAMES!!!!!!

How exactly are you getting to the install script?

I'm having this problem with a lot of the more simple legacy games such as the diner dash series. My other games and software install fine. Ironically, it seems to be a problem with the playfirst line for me. It says it requires you to have admin priv's, and on 10.5 those priv's were correctly assessed by the installer. It seems for some reason, the upgrade to 10.6 has lost the ability for these installers to see that.

It seems a shame to lose games that I used when in airports or waiting around etc to blow off a little time.

Fantastic - Thanks for your help.

I was having problems installing TurboCAD Mac Pro v2 on my new MBP, with the admin message.

Followed the instructions and changed the installer script - worked like a treat.

all the best
