Q: Must Quit and Restart Mail.app to get emails from Exchnage

Help please. My wife and I are having the same problem on two separate systems.

We're both on Snow Leopard and are using Rackspace's Exchange 2007 servers for email.

All of our email accounts work fine except the Exchange account.

When mail.app first starts, it works fine, but then activity monitor shows "Opening Mailbox -- Requesting Latest Information" with no movement.

Next to the email account is the picture of the circle with the pie slice removed.

*To actually get my email* from the Exchange server, I have to quit Mail.app and restart. All the mail then flows through.

My iPhone works just fine with the same Exchange set up.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Note that I only have 2000 email messages on the server, so I don't think I've reached a limit.

Rackspace helped me out. There was a setting in Exchange I needed to use that wasn't being used.

I was using the ActiveSync settings that I also used for my iPhone. According to both Apple and Rackspace, that's only for the iPhone. There is a particular server address for an exchange account that the Mac likes.

If you have autodiscovery set up, use it. You may have to contact your host provider to find out. Some helpful instructions are here:

NOT solved. Even after restarting mail.app I get the message:
    Opening mailbox:... Requesting latest information
    and nothing happens...

    * Auto discover on our Exchange server is on
    * I used automatic mail set-up to connect to our exchange server webmail.unik.no

    Does anyone have a solution?
    Thanks

I have the same problem as well with Mail.app, MBP, Snow Leopard, and no auto-updating of Exchange mail. Any success for you?

    Same problem here..
SL 10.6.1, Mail 4.1, through exchange server.
did the plist thing, rebuilt the mailbox, Iphone works, webmail works, but have to multiple restart on the mac.
So far nothing but inconsistent starts of mail.

I've got this same issue after upgrading to SL. I am running a Mac Pro and a MBP, both configured to our corporate Exchange server. Everything's fine for a while, but then at random times, the MAIL.APP will cease getting new emails.

When I open the activity window (option-0) I typically see "Opening mailbox" for the inbox and "Adding Messages", both with barber poles that are not revolving.

I've let it sit this way for hours and it never comes back.

It's only by quitting mail and re-running that I am able to get my email again.

the only account I have is my exchange account; no POP, no IMAP.

OCCASSIONALLY, but pressing on the stopsign icon in the activity window on all activities, it will seem to recover, but not for long.

I've been all over Google and Apple support boards and this thread is the only one I can find where this is happening. I HAVE to think it's happening more often to others because I see the same behavior on TWO DIFFERENT SYSTEMS (granted the Exchange server is common, but we have never had to do anything to Exchange -- it seems to be working fine)

I'm living with this issue for now, but it's a real PITA to deal with. Only when I look at my inbox and see no emails for 15 minutes or more do I suspect I might not be getting emails. Then, when I re-run, they appear as if nothing ever happened.

Very, very frustrating. I'm thinking I was better off with Entourage....

I experienced the same issue when I migrated from an IMAP connection to our corporate Exchange server to a native Exchange connection. In my case, I had a corrupt e-mail message in my inbox that was preventing Mail.app from retrieving new mail messages. Activity monitor was showing the "Opening Mailbox -- Requesting Latest Information".

While reviewing past e-mails, I noticed that I was unable to delete an old e-mail message. Mail.app would throw a message stating that the message could not be moved to the trash. Since the message was on the Exchange server, I logged into Exchange using Outlook Web Access, and deleted the message. I also cleared out my sent items and deleted items folders.

I then shut down Mail.app, and, upon restart of Mail.app, I was able to retrieve new mail messages without having to restart Mail.app.

Again, a corrupt e-mail message on the server appears to have been the cause of my issue.

Zane -- thanks for that! I'd been having this question for weeks and had been pulling my (rapidly receding) hair out over it. I logged into my account via Outlook Web Access, found an old message that should have been deleted from my inbox by a rule long ago but hadn't been, went ahead and manually deleted it and now my Inbox is golden.

Another satisfied customer! I was having the exact same issue upgrading from IMAP to Exchange 2007 after the SL upgrade. I was going nuts trying to figure this out. As soon as I seen you mention a corrupt email was causing your problem I remembered seeing a message on my iPhone that was not in my computer inbox. Deleting that message solved my problem. I can get email again! Thanks!
