Printer works via USB but not BONJOUR

Just spent 90 minutes with AppleCare folks and HP Tech Support folks. Turns out that my HP Laserjet 1012 printer IS supported with a new HP Driver for 10.6, built into 10.6; but ONLY when connected via the USB port on the computer. BONJOUR connections (for this printer) are not supported by any currently available HP driver. Sad but true. I'm out of luck!

Addendum. It DOES work to hard-connect the printer to my desktop iMAC ... check the "share printer" boxes in System Preferences (both under Printer/Fax and under Sharing) ... and then reload the driver on my laptops. The AppleCare techies did not think this would work (since it still uses Bonjour in some way) ... but it does!

A reasonable work-around until HP updates their printer to support BONJOUR connections; ... or Apple puts more USB ports on their comuters! lol

This problem is the same with the HP Deskjet 5100 series. It works perfectly with direct connection to the Mac. Airport Extreme has lost some of it's important features: printing.... Upgrading to Snow Leopards does not cost $29.00 (EURO in my case) but $29.00 plus a printer... some additional $100.00

I'm very disappointed in this upgrade.. and in Apple in respect.

You can try IP printing instead of Default/Bonjour. I just attacked this same problem on my HP LaserJet 1012 and it's HP JetDirect 175x Print Server. The 1012 showed up fine with Bonjour, but print jobs never went through.

Using information I found in [this post|http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/topic4883.html#d30aug2 009] from Flawn Williams at MacInTouch, and [this document|http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=fr& cc=fr&taskId=115&prodSeriesId=28830&prodTypeId=18972&objectID=bpj02738] over at HP France, I was able to set the IP address of the JetDirect manually through it's web interface, then into System Preferences to "Add Printer," selecting IP, selecting the LPD protocol, typing in that same IP address, and from there Snow Leopard found the proper printer driver (and confirmed for me that this was going to work).

If you have a similar problem, I encourage you to follow both of those links. Lots of other options are included.
