Using Word 2004 in OSX.6

One feature in word that was a great time saver under the file menu was open and then to type the beginning letters of a desired file name rather than using the scroll bar. I find that I can find the doc by typing the beginning letters once, then it renders typing to go to the document unusable. Has anyone found a work around?
