Importing HDV 1080i into Final Cut Pro

I have a Sony HVR-A1U and Final Cut Pro 6.0.6. I was trying to import my 1080i footage but I keep getting error messages from Final Cut saying that it can't communicate with the camera or the format is wrong, etc. I was able to capture my 1080i footage with iMovie '08 just fine but I would like to be able to import directly into Final Cut just to save time and keep my work flow together. This is the first time I've worked with HD footage. I have a feeling that I need to change the import format in Final Cut, but I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
