Multiplexing error in iDVD

I've read some of the other posts about this, but none mentioned the same symptoms I'm having.

iDVD throws a multiplexing error if I have chapters in my video. If I remove the chapters in iMovie and then use iDVD to burn, it works great. But adding the chapters back into the movie (in iMovie), then burning using iDVD causes Multiplexing.

How do I resolve this? I need my movies to have chapters!

Hi

My collecting material on this. Unsorted and not 100% at all.

*Multiplexing Error*

Use of strange video/audio material eg .avi, .wmv, .mp3 etc.

I only use.
Video - StreamingDV (miniDV tape via FireWire) and
Audio = .aiff (as on audio-CDs) (else coverted to this .aiff 16-bit 48KHz)

*Using strange letters in video project name eg +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9*
*strange letters in project name eg +*
as described by Donnyboy69. Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.

from Robert Modero.
"Multiplexing Error. Problem during initialization of tracks"
Simply remember to add subtitles to your Quicktime files and menu buttons.
Once I did that, I was back in business.

I always makes a DiskImage first and test this so that it runs OK

I use only - Verbatim DVDs

I use only - DVD-R

I burn at an as slow speed possibly eg x1

This gives good DVDs

Thanks for that list! It's a start.

My project name is fine. The only special characters I'm using are hyphens (dashes).

I'm not importing anything weird. Both audio and video are coming straight from my AVCHD camcorder (Canon). Nothing special.

More importantly, it used to work. It doesn't now. It failed on both Leopard (which I had before) and my recently upgraded Snow Leopard. So I know it's not the OS version. I'm baffled!

Can I revert to an older iDVD version? It might be an update I ran for iDVD....

Delete all encoded assets and try again. Did you follow the advice Bengt gave you regarding a disc image to the desktop and then using apple's dvd player app to test playback? If it plays as expected, then burn to Dvd-R Verbatim at 4x and you should be ok. But if not just come on back.

Btw, make sure you have all the latest updates by running apple's disc utility. I wouldn't recommend going backwards but if this is your own choice then start by using appdelete from apple's web site prior to reinstalling iDvd. Good luck and feel free to keep us updated on your progress.

I'm going to try deleting encoded assets then burning as disc image.

Need some clarification: when you say "encoded assets", does that mean the iDVD files?

What I've been doing thus far every time I'm trying to burn is to re-create export/share from iMove to iDVD. This takes forever, but ensures iMovie is outputting new iDVD assets every time.

Thanks. I'll report back....

From your reply I'm still uncertain if you deleted all encoded assets before burning a disc image and then using apple's dvd player to test for proper plackback. Look under the "advanced menu" in order to follow through with this procedure prior to making a disc image to the desktop.

Feel free to post back with the results.

Hi

One more new line into this.

from Boise Jim

Problem may be solved!

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on grey background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.

Hopefully this can help other people.

No. It's Snow Leopard on a MacPro with 2 X 2.8 Quad-core Intel Xeon. I'm not sure why my profile shows the G5. I replaced that nearly a year ago. Ah. I see. I forgot to change it myself in the post. Oops.

Nonetheless, I still cant burn. I removed the preference file in the user Library, repaired permissions, and got maybe a trifle farther, but still a multiplexing error. I have now removed both preference files (from the user library and the main library), repaired permissions, and a new burn has begun. I'll know in a couple of hours if that works.

.... although certainly the drive is reading properly ....

most dvd burners have 2 separate lenses each (one to read the dvd and the other one burns / writes data to the dvd).

A quality lens cleaner from Maxell or 3M often helps. But avoid low budget kits since they can serve to do more harm or further complicate matters.

In lieu of a lens cleaner kit I've been known to use compressed air but only at a safe distance (6-10 inches away from the lens itself). You can try at your own risk....
