Q: Random freezing from Snow Leopard - total lock-up for about 30 seconds

I am having random freezes like the authors of many recent topics on this forum. From the number of 'views' on their threads, it seems that many other users have the same problem.

These are not like any other freezes I have ever had - usually when the beach ball shows, it still allows me to show the dock, move windows etc... but these freezes bring everything to a halt.

Since this problem first started for me the say I upgraded, and seems to be the same (from what I can tell) for other users who reported this, does anyone know if there is something about snow leopard that uses the hardware differently? So that whereas under leopard (32-bit) there may not have been a fault, but on switching to 10.6 a problem could reveal itself?

Mac Pro 1,1 2007, 2x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core, Mac OS X (10.6), 4 x 1Gb Apple RAM, 1x 500Gb WD Caviar, 2x Optiarc Superdrive, GeForce 7300 256Mb, Dual monitors

Well I'm Glad someone finally took the time to read my post from the 19th about removing SIMBL and cleaning out the Library files!!

gajones, Glad your up and running without issue now!!

for all the New people here is my post from the 19th, Please check these folders in both the Library folder in your home directory and the root of your main hard drive.
    "
Ok there are lots of item to check for leftovers that could be causing problems.

Run SIMBL uninstaller included in the 0.9.6b build. (if you installed it for plugins)

Then Check these locations for stuff not properly removed and that only 64bit SL compatible versions of the software found in these locations are installed:
/Library/Application Support/SIMBL (This Needs to Be removed)
~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL (This Needs to be Removed from your home directory)
    /Library/Bundles/
    /Library/Contextual Menu Items/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
/Library/LaunchAgents/ (Remove SIMBL if its there)
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/
    /Library/PreferencePanes/
    /Library/QuickLook/
    /Library/ScriptingAdditions
    /Library/StartupItems/
    /Library/

To reinstall SIMBL run the installer for .0.9.6b only. and check that the permissions on the /Library/LaunchAgents/ folder are "755" or "drwxr-xr-x"

Thank you z1ross and gajones. The /Library and SIMBL fixes seem to have solved the problem for me.

I just tried the suggestion by dlethe and it did not fix my problem. I just restarted and almost immediately I had a delay. I usually can recreate the delay when CTRL-1,2,3,4 switching through Spaces.

This is on a clean install of Snow Leopard on my older iMac (the white one).

    I wanted to add another user to the "frustrated" list. I have a 3 month old MBP that was incredibly stable running 10.5, I upgraded to 10.6.1 and I get the wheel 3 or more times per day. The system.log contains;

    "Safari[252]: INSERT-HANG-DETECTED: Tx time:29.924218, # of Inserts: 40, # of bytes written: 267835, Did shrink: NO"

I recently converted from the other OS (if you want to call it that), I was really happy with this one, until the upgrade. It seems like there are a lot of people with this issue, with surprisingly little feedback from Apple. Please tell me this is not normal....

64-bit mode solves the problem probably because in this case some 32-bit stuff isn't loaded, therefore it is only removing the symptoms but not the cause, which is probably 32-bit stuff that isn't compatible with SL.

I was having similar problems, I had done many of the things recommended by Forum members.
    -- Font Repair
    -- Permissions Repair
    -- re-set my PR-Ram

Each step seemed to make a difference, but I was still getting hangs / crashes including Disk Utility and Console.

SUCCESS seems to have finally occurred however when I removed my TechTool Pro eDrive !
I erased the partition complete and re-established my drive.

    No crashes since.

    Hi banditry,

I have new 13" MacBook Pro (2.26GHz/2GB) and was having the same issue after I upgraded to 10.6, it was very annoying, but since I've started running Safari in 32-bit mode, all is fine. Do this:

    1. Select Safari in the Applications folder, press command + I to open the information dialog.

    2. In the General section (you may need to click on it to open the frame) select the "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox.

    3. Close Safari and re-open it. You may need to re-boot Mac OS to see the benefits, and possibly do the above from all administrator accounts on your Mac.

Do the same to any application that is freezing, and hopefully all will be well. It has worked very well for me.

Cleaning out the /Library folders as suggested certainly made a big difference for me. My Mini is much more responsive, and I am getting fewer beach balls. Not all is perfect, however. Shut-down & reboot seem to take much longer than they should. Login takes 5 min. or more. During that time, the beach ball spins and nothing seems to happen. Then the menu items appear and all is well. I don't have much in the startup list either. At least my system is useable now.

Same problem ... reset PRAM, did a reinstall of SL, but keyboard/trackpad still freeze up frequently. Really frustrating. External mouse/keyboard will work, but that kinda defeats the purpose of having a laptop, huh?

I really hope this gets addressed in 10.6.2, and soon.

OK You're all doing arcane tinkering, switching your apps from 64 bit to 32 bit etc, which you SHOULD NOT NEED TO DO! We're on macs guys, NOT pcs. A lot of FUD being spread in this post.

Just reset your System Management Controller, it's really easy and certainly fixed all my beachballing/freezing problems:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411

And if that doesn't work, then get your mac repaired under warranty, you SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE doing all these bizarre rituals to get your mac working.

Heh, you do realize the irony in your post?

I've cleaned up my Library folders as described in an earlier post and that fixed my problem. I'm into several days of regular use without hangs now. As others, I believe der 64bit boot essentially does the same thing as cleaning up does: it prevents loading the 32bit culprit. I also believe ther might be several culprits that trigger this problem, which is why people report success with different fixes.

I'm late to this thread and haven't tried all of the suggestions (will do that next) but I also have the beachballing problem and for me it started after I switched to using an Airport Extreme (instead of a Netgear wireless router). The difference was almost immediate.

I also don't have any of these INSERT-HANG messages in /var/log/system.log. Nor do I have SIMBL installed like others do. Nevertheless, I'm experiencing the same symptoms. Just an FYI.

From tailing /var/log/system.log, I can say that my hangs correspond to this message:

Sep 27 19:18:34 togoshis-macbook-pro Terminal[220]: [IMKInputSession setValue:forTag:] exception caught.\n NSPortTimeoutException : [NOTE: this exception originated in the server.]\nconnection timeout: did not receive reply

    Anyone know what this means?
