Q: Random freezing from Snow Leopard - total lock-up for about 30 seconds

I am having random freezes like the authors of many recent topics on this forum. From the number of 'views' on their threads, it seems that many other users have the same problem.

These are not like any other freezes I have ever had - usually when the beach ball shows, it still allows me to show the dock, move windows etc... but these freezes bring everything to a halt.

Since this problem first started for me the say I upgraded, and seems to be the same (from what I can tell) for other users who reported this, does anyone know if there is something about snow leopard that uses the hardware differently? So that whereas under leopard (32-bit) there may not have been a fault, but on switching to 10.6 a problem could reveal itself?

Mac Pro 1,1 2007, 2x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core, Mac OS X (10.6), 4 x 1Gb Apple RAM, 1x 500Gb WD Caviar, 2x Optiarc Superdrive, GeForce 7300 256Mb, Dual monitors

extrabadwolfie, or Anyone who really needs help,
Can you open a terminal and run the following commands and send me the 2 log files when done? Here is a list of the commands I'm using and what they are going to do. The logs will only list all the file names with their paths and not the file contents. I work in a very Security conscious Job, so Please look through logs and verify you are comfortable with them before sending. Also research my commands if you have any questions. This is the simplest way to generate a list of all the files in 99% of the locations that could be causing anyone BeachBall grief.

The Commands and what they do:

#1. Script <destionationFile> = Commands dumps all the Terminal screen output to a log file specified. I'm making it show up on your desk as LibraryFileList.txt using "~/Desktop/LibraryFileList#.txt"

#2. cd = used to change to directory specified

#3. find = used to Find from location (.)=current, -type f = files. This will list all the files under the location.

My Commands to run. There are 2 sets of 3 commands for each file list. Just copy and past into Terminal one line at a time and hit enter. The "script" line is the first in each set.

    #1.(from a new Terminal Window):
    script ~/Desktop/LibraryFileList1.txt
    cd Library
    find . -type f
(Once Completed, Close the terminal window)

    #2.(from a new Terminal Window):
    script ~/Desktop/LibraryFileList2.txt
    cd /Library
    find . -type f
(Once Completed, Close the terminal window)

Now Compress each log by right clicking on it and selecting "Compress...." and send me the compressed log files to "z1ross at gmail dot com"

Right, installed the 'Performance Update 1.0' and restarted my computer.

No freezes, stalls or beachballs as of yet, but it's only been 3 minutes.

Will report if I get ANY hangs whatsoever, giving details as to what Apps were running; which was the main app that froze; whether it was a total freeze or just a beachball etc...

HOPEFULLY this Performance Update should sort stuff out...

    - fingers crossed -

I have exactly the same issue on a macbook pro 17 (early 2009) running 10.6.1
I have tried everything mentioned here.
I have also applied the performance update 1.0 but I have a feeling that it only made things worse!
Not so happy now, leopard was by far more stable than snow...

I have found lock-up and beach-ball problem after the computer has been asleep. By accident, I discovered today that hitting COMMAND-F3 will show the desktop windows (on both internal and external monitors). I was able to quit applications by click-hold on the dock icon (but not for iTunes or Mail). BUT, when I would click on a window, the screens would turn black and I could not do anything. The FORCE QUIT window would not come up. I eventually had to hold down the power button to start over. I have just done the most recent update, so we'll see what happens. Anyway, this is most frustrating for an otherwise really nice OS!

True, the Performance Update made things better. I have no more hanging issues and Safari works fine no freezes with any other apps and things are back to normal.

Let us see how far this can go...

    Regards...

does anyone think they'll release a performance update for standard macbooks?

thinking i need a macbook pro (the other half is against this!), though reluctant as my macbook has served me faithfully so far and normally whatever i chuck at it, it'll cope no problem.

    I doubt it.

Did you have Leopard (10.5) installed on your Mac before this?

freezing is under control. for safety, i've left the dock as it is. when i started added and removing things from the dock, the freezing would come back. only hang ups i get now is spinning beachball whilst ejecting in dvd player. not tried cd's in itunes for a few days, so will report back later.

I must say that the fix really worked for me. I'm pleased to see that Apple released a fix within a month that actually solves (most of ) the problem. That is an experience I never had with Windows, in all those years.
