Q: Random freezing from Snow Leopard - total lock-up for about 30 seconds

I am having random freezes like the authors of many recent topics on this forum. From the number of 'views' on their threads, it seems that many other users have the same problem.

These are not like any other freezes I have ever had - usually when the beach ball shows, it still allows me to show the dock, move windows etc... but these freezes bring everything to a halt.

Since this problem first started for me the say I upgraded, and seems to be the same (from what I can tell) for other users who reported this, does anyone know if there is something about snow leopard that uses the hardware differently? So that whereas under leopard (32-bit) there may not have been a fault, but on switching to 10.6 a problem could reveal itself?

Mac Pro 1,1 2007, 2x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core, Mac OS X (10.6), 4 x 1Gb Apple RAM, 1x 500Gb WD Caviar, 2x Optiarc Superdrive, GeForce 7300 256Mb, Dual monitors

Nice! I updated too. Everything seems smooth for now, although in my situation the culprit was paragon ntfs. I found peace from the moment I removed it. I wonder what will happen if I install it again now that I am updated to 10.6.2 ...

I have also updated to 10.6.2 and tried what happens if I uncheck the "Disable Last Acccess Time" option in paragon...

After about 2 hours I had a freeze and had to hard-reset my MacBook -,-

So I checked the "Disable Last Acccess Time" option again and didn't have any freezes till 10 am!

Apple still hasn't fixed this problem (I don't think, that it's only on my MacBook Pro...)

PhilSur If you are getting problems solely with the use of paragon NTFS then I can't see how apple has anything to do with it.
I think that Paragon should improve the compatibility of their application with snow leopard. I faced also problems with their product which by the way I have purchased it.

Last Access Time causing slowdowns is a known issue in the Windows world as well. You can see a performance increase in XP when using an NTFS volume if you disable it. This is definitely not an Apple bug.

I find myself wondering how long before someone at Microsoft turns this thread, and the many others like it, into a great PC vs Mac commercial. I am no longer able to tell my friends that I love my Mac because "it just works!".

I have a 2006 MBP and have been totally frustrated by this problem since snow leopard. I've tried every fix suggested including replacing the hard drive and a clean install. Yesterday I up graded to 10.6.2. No change. Today I went with the Paragon disable the time stamp suggestion. We'll see how that goes. Every time I thing it's fixed i get the same progression of slowing, beach balls, and freezing, Then the drive won't boot. I do a disk repair and it works for a while longer, then it all starts up again. This machine may end up with a single windows partition.

    Does Apple know about this?

I just wish somebody at Apple would tell me how to fix my formerly beautiful macbook pro
( which by the way is humming along quite nicely since the paragon fix). I also disabled MacFuse since it's similar to paragon ntfs. Was that a good move?

    Hello!
I am having irregular freeezes since Upgrade to Snow Leopard, maybe around 10, but i do not work that much with the Mac, so that it is actually pretty high, and something i am used to only on PC. Freezes happen on late MacBook 2008, with 4 GB Memory, connected to Cinema HD. MacBook's screen is not turned on.
I hoped the latest Update to 10.6.2 will improve the situation - but immediately after the update whole system froze, and only turn off-button helped.
Today i looked through system logs, and i found something:

Nov 10 20:16:36 pelda PubSubAgent[123]: EntryCore: Multiple authors not supported yet (ignoring subsequent ones)
    Nov 10 20:16:36 pelda Safari[129]: INSERT-HANG-DETECTED: Tx time:3.978258, # of Inserts: 62, # of bytes written: 490964, Did shrink: NO

Nov 10 20:21:48 localhost fseventsd[31]: event logs in /.fseventsd out of sync with volume. destroying old logs. (463 21 560)

This is pretty bad if it's connected to Safari - and when i recall the freezes, the only common thing was that i had Safari dowloading or being active - but if switching to FireFox hepls, then it's good again, and i do not have to fear that my computer is not working properly anymore, maybe because of new RAM DIMMS i installed or something.

I'll switch to FireFox, and see. Actually i wanted to sell the Macbook, and buy MacMini and MacAir instead, but i can't, if it's not working properly and i do not know the reason...

Ok, i cleaned all caches i could with Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, restarted, did a Disk Verify with Disk Utility--> Disk OK.
Read some forums and news, surfed around, and then, i clicked on one link--> FREEZE. Turn off, turn on.

again, WebKist is the last message.
I found another FREEZE in my logs without WebKit, though (but with kCGErrorFailure):

Well my 24 hours of using my macbook pro as a mac are now up. Freeze, reboot, repair disk. I was using firefox at the time, by the way. I'll be running the machine in the vista partition for awhile.

This is STILL happening. I've removed paragon, text expander and growl. Locked up 4 times! an actual increase. I reinstall these and things settled down. But last night it locked up like I've not seen before. The screen froze, then inverted colors, slowly. Really weird. I've reviewed the system log and the only thing I see is that firefox had multiple entries and time machine:

    .org.mozilla.firefox[790]: Debugger() was called!
[0x0-0x92092].backupd-helper[1119]: Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - failed to resolve alias to backup volume

So at this point I'm suspicious of Firefox. I remove and use safari fr while and see if anything changes.

I was having this problem and thought it was just me. At first I thought it had something to do with Mail. Since then I have tried a few of the things seen in this discussion. Just recently I tried both the SMC and PRAM resets and seem to notice a much quicker load of applications, especially Safari and Firefox.

Like many others I tried Disk Utility etc...I am not a deep techie user so I did not go near clearing out files etc....We will see, but I definitely notice better performance just after the PRAM and SMC. Either way, I am disappointed that Apple is almost silent on the issue. Thanks for all your comments and help.

So after two freezes yesterday, I decided this is more than likely a hardware failure or incompatibility. I partitioned off 20 gigs and installed win7. The logic being if it locks up running windoze, then I can rule out SL as the culprit. It's cute really, running a PC with a mac-ish theme. Anyway, after this set up and ran all night, no lock ups. I'll leave out the part about the battle with a mighty mouse install. About mid afternoon, bam, win7 froze a similar manner. Now I can get this pos off my machine. There must be a issue with the hard drive, or worse. ****.

In following that same logic I've disabled the sudden motion sensor. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934). Since then no complete lockups but i still get 30 sec beach balls on occasion. This computer just is not the same. Still waiting for help from apple.
