Q: Random freezing from Snow Leopard - total lock-up for about 30 seconds

I am having random freezes like the authors of many recent topics on this forum. From the number of 'views' on their threads, it seems that many other users have the same problem.

These are not like any other freezes I have ever had - usually when the beach ball shows, it still allows me to show the dock, move windows etc... but these freezes bring everything to a halt.

Since this problem first started for me the say I upgraded, and seems to be the same (from what I can tell) for other users who reported this, does anyone know if there is something about snow leopard that uses the hardware differently? So that whereas under leopard (32-bit) there may not have been a fault, but on switching to 10.6 a problem could reveal itself?

Mac Pro 1,1 2007, 2x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core, Mac OS X (10.6), 4 x 1Gb Apple RAM, 1x 500Gb WD Caviar, 2x Optiarc Superdrive, GeForce 7300 256Mb, Dual monitors

Is Firefox open when any of these crashes/beachballs/freezes occur?

I have been having this problem for the last two months now, and I tried all the suggestions made in this thread, none of which worked. However, I had been noticing that the problem first manifests itself when the Airport utility stops responding and Firefox does not go past the "Looking for..." status message when opening a page. After that, the menu bar stops responding, followed by the dock, followed by open applications. Finally the mouse beachballs forever, and nothing short of a hard reset will get the system back. No console messages are logged during this period, and I haven't been getting any of the Console log messages as described in previous posts. These crashes would occurs atleast once every 2-3 hours.

I didn't suspect Firefox since I was using it to access the internet; to test, I installed Chrome and started using it yesterday. So far, no problems, nearly 20 hrs uptime. I suspect there might be some problem with Firefox that caused the entire system to stall, although highly unlikely. I'll update soon on how long I have been able to keep the system running without a crash.

If it does turn out that FF is the culprit, then I suppose Apple would have to make sure third party applications don't freeze up the system this way

This sounds like it could be a different problem for yourself. The problem described on this thread is one that affects one of several applications, which does include firefox, however the freezing only lasts for 30 seconds for these guys - whereas you mention that your firefox stalling can only be fixed through a reboot?

After a Disk Utility check this showed up. Is this the culprit in my case? I have no idea what it means...

Those are listed when one Repairs Permissions....totally normal. There's an Apple doc. about it.

We would like to know what Disk Utility says when you do a +Disk Repair+.

This function can only be done while booted up on your install disk or another hard drive with the same OS on it. See my previous post .

My 2006 macbook pro has been victimized by this problem. I have tried just about every remedy suggested including changing hard drives. Quite recently (perhaps foolishly) I purchased a new iMac. The iMac is running SL without any problems so I am trying an experiment. I reformatted and reinstalled SL on the macbook pro. During the setup I migrated the iMac drive contents to the laptop. I will endeavor to run the laptop for awhile without making any further changes (other than the combined update to SL). If the problem recurs I believe that would indicate a hardware related issue. If it does not recur that would indicate software incompatibility somewhere. I'll keep you posted.

I'm still disturbed by the lack of response from Apple on this issue. This is an apple support forum, is it not? We may be small in numbers but this is a significant problem. Not everyone had trouble with windows vista, but there the larger relative number of users involved almost brought Microsoft down. I'd like to see an official apple response at least acknowledging our difficulty.

It is not an Apple support forum. It is a user to user forum.

It's on the apple web site, requires an apple log in. I would think somebody from apple might be interested in monitoring it. Perhaps they might improve the product.

Too Bad. So who is this "Apple Discussions Teams" that sends me the emails from my subscribed threads? How do we send Apple techs a link to this forum so they know what's going on?

Btw 10.6.3 is on its way and weight over 660MB ! Let's hope it'll fix it <_< (It seems to me we're saying this on each 10.6.x release -_- )

I'm also having no success. I went to an apple store, commented about the issue, one of the guys told me he wasn't aware of this problem and I was the first to come to him.

My mbp also is freezing after SL install. I'm going to do a clean install today, update to 10.6.2 and see how it goes. If nothing works, then I will go back to Leopard...

I am not sure why or how however my beachballs, freezing and repeated INSERT-HANG-DETECTED msgs in the console log have stopped for over a week. I still get the odd stall in iTunes but mainly when it is doing something I can explain so I'm not so worried about that. The good news is the system wide freezes appear to have stopped (for now anyway). The only changes I made at around the time the issues stopped were 1) remove VMWare as a standard dock item (only launch it by navigating to it in finder under the applications folder and 2) removed any plists with the array issue mentioned earlier in this thread (I did find a few plist with the issue so I deleted them as suggested).

I hope that helps some more of you...

I believe it's still hard to tell where the problem is. Because we've been looking throughout the internet with no response. Mainly, all problems are solved when posted to the internet, but in the case, people are just lost and guessing a what the problem can be. Anyway there is not much from Leopard to Snow, I better get back to a more stable version.
