mDNSResponder repeating over and over in system log and other network issue

Hi all,

I wasn't sure whether to put this into printers or network, but as the printer is a networked printer and not a directly attached one, and my other problem is network related - figured it should go here.

First:

I'm having a problem with mDNSResponder - this is a sample of what's in my system.log file:

Sep 3 07:21:48 enterprise mDNSResponder[17]: Client application bug: DNSServiceResolve(Brother\032MFC-6490CW. printer.tcp.local.) active for over two minutes. This places considerable burden on the network.
Sep 3 07:27:54 enterprise mDNSResponder[17]: Client application bug: DNSServiceResolve(Brother\032MFC-6490CW. printer.tcp.local.) active for over two minutes. This places considerable burden on the network.
Sep 3 07:32:00 enterprise mDNSResponder[17]: Client application bug: DNSServiceResolve(Brother\032MFC-6490CW. printer.tcp.local.) active for over two minutes. This places considerable burden on the network.
Sep 3 07:37:21 enterprise mDNSResponder[17]: Client application bug: DNSServiceResolve(Brother\032MFC-6490CW. printer.tcp.local.) active for over two minutes. This places considerable burden on the network.
Sep 3 07:38:54 enterprise ntpd[44]: time reset +0.249989 s
Sep 3 07:42:31 enterprise mDNSResponder[17]: Client application bug: DNSServiceResolve(Brother\032MFC-6490CW. printer.tcp.local.) active for over two minutes. This places considerable burden on the network.

This is repeating OVER and OVER and OVER. I wanted to uninstall the printer - so I removed it from my printers list, and this error still continues. The software that came with the printer had a vise installer, but no uninstaller, and Brothers site doesn't have instructions for removing Brother Control Center. Any tips on how to get this issue to stop would be most appreciative.

Now, my other problem (which may or may not be related):

I don't see my network in shared places, nor can I see any systems on my network via shift cmdk. There are 3 other systems on my network that should show up - my wifes vista box, my droboshare and my HTPC. My wifes vista box shows all systems (including mine) so I know SAMBA is responding to requests of some sort. This is a workgroup environment, and I have confirmed that all systems are in the same workgroup (even if they weren't, you'd think I'd see multiple workgroups listed when I opened up Networks). I can connect to a share if I know the system ip and share name.

Any clues on these two issues would be most appreciated. I know 10.6 is so new, and I've not had any luck locating info on google regarding these problems...

Nope, didn't solve it.

I'm still seeing:

Sep 3 12:16:46 enterprise mDNSResponder[17]: Client application bug: DNSServiceResolve(Brother\032MFC-6490CW. printer.tcp.local.) active for over two minutes. This places considerable burden on the network.

I tried it with resetting but not re-adding the printer.

I'm really not sure what to do, I really would like this to stop.

I'm figuring there is, or something that is triggering mDNSResponder activity. I didn't see any in activity monitor or on the ps list in terminal (ps -auwx) I want to get rid of all of the brother software (the control center, presto, etc.) but I can't find it on my system to delete it and the installer package doesn't seem to offer a uninstall option...

This is bizzare. I'm still getting the error. I've removed the control center (took a while, but finally found the instructions), the printer is not installed (well, at least it's not in my list of printers) and I'm not sure what else to do. There must be a way to force mdnsresponder to not do what it's doing...

It took a lot of work, but I cleared up my problem caused by the brother printer software. It ended up that there were three server apps running that didn't have brother in the name at all, but were part of the package:

LOGINserver
NETserver
USBserver

Terminating the running process wasn't enough. I ended up following two sets of directions to remove brother control center and associated software - part 1 was here:

http://www.parkerwallace.com/BrotherControlCenterMacOSXLeopard

which was the removal of the twain component and a few other things

Part 2 was here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8056868

which basically had you delete a set of plist files - I terminated the processes, deleted the plist files, and to make sure, move those three portions out of where they were.

this discussion was helpful for identifying the problem. it looks to me like the source of the problem is an error in the way the brother software is coded. this article touches on proper bonjour coding.

<http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/qa/qa2001/qa1297.html>

I am not sure that the error is issued when logged in to a standard account rather than an admin account. i did not see it on a machine with a standard account but did see it when i fast user switched into an admin account to look at the system log.

Anyway, the solutions y'all have posted don't help if you actually have brother printers that you need to use. here is what to do instead.

01) define a static IP for your printer.

02) use the "Device Selector" program, located in

Library -> Printers -> Brother -> Utlities -> Device Selector

and set the scan to printer address by IP number, not Bonjour name.

03) repeat this for every account on the computer.

04) Messages should be gone.
