How do I make a backslash (\) on my mac keyboard

I tried the Shift Alt 7 and it doesnt work. It makes a cross symbol. Any help would be appreciated.

If you're using an U.S. or Canadian English keyboard layout, press the key just above Return. If not, what layout are you using?

We tried that button above the enter key, and it comes up as a backslash, but when you press the enter button, it turns into %5c.

If you're trying to enter and use it into a web browser's address bar, that's normal. If you're trying to use it somewhere else, type it in in a location other than a browser's address bar.

This is an US English keyboard. A1048 is the model.
