Newb question - Duplicate command vs. Copy

What's the difference between Duplicate and Copy in Finder?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

Duplicate makes an identical copy of the selection in the current folder. Copy puts a reference to it onto the clipboard for pasting elsewhere.

So if I wanted to backup a folder to a NAS - which command should I use?

Use Copy, navigate to it, and use Paste, or just drag the folder over.
