"The apple usb modem is not supported ..."

Hi,

i just upgraded to 10.6 and now i get a message

"The apple usb modem is not supported on this computer"

which is quite strange, the modem is just 4 month old and now apple is not supporting their hardware anymore? Can this be true?

Cheers,

Markus

so is there a fix to this issue beyond jest running in 32 bit kernel mode? and do you think this jest like a driver issue where apple has not made one yet and by 10.6.1 or so there will be support for this? (also if you make a new location in the networking settings and put in all the settings for the 56 k modem you may see faster speeds.

Everyone try this. I have had similar problems to all of you and this seems to have fixed everything.

1. Go into your router's administration page and find your DNS server(s).
2. Open up Network Preferences in your System Preferences window.
3. In the Advanced section, click on the DNS tab.
4. Manually add the DNS servers you looked up in Step 1.

Hope this helps!

All:

I too receive this message when starting in 64 bit mode. All seems to work fine in 32 bit mode.

However, reverting to 32 bit mode is not a solution, but a temporary work-around.

While dial-up is my last resort internet connection method when WiFi or wired ethernet is not available, it is none the less critical to retain this capability when on the road. iPhone tethering is not yet available, and is not a solution if you are in a location with no AT&T coverage. Besides, I am afraid that the cost of tethering may be prohibitive to some.

I believe this to be a Apple USB dial-up modem driver issue, and needs to be updated by Apple.

I have been to the Genius Bar at my local Apple store, and they could not resolve this.

They have directed me to contact Apple Care Support, which I will do later today.

The status of this thread is identified as Answered, which I do not believe is correct.

Apple needs to update the driver for this device to work in 64 bit mode.

I will update this thread following my call to Apple Care Support.

UPDATE:
I just finished a call with Apple Care support. While I subscribe to Apple Care for my MacBook Pro, I have never used it before today.

What a great user experience! I initiated the support call from the Apple Care Support page, got a call back within a minute, and was speaking to a Apple Care support rep within 2 minutes. After some discussion, the Rep escalated me to a specialist, who further discussed the issue.

In brief, the specialist is going to escalate the issue to engineering to determine if a driver update is applicable, and identify if the update will be incorporated in a future OS X 10.6 update. We did touch briefly on the product discontinued status.

The Specialist promised to call me on a number I provided, and indicate the result of discussions with Apple Engineering.

All that said, I am optimistic that Apple will update the driver in a future OS update, or post a patch in the downloads area.

I will post another update when I receive word.

What I don't understand about this is what System Profiler shows.

AppleSM56KUSBModemFamily:

But yet it will not load with 64-bit kernel.

Unless it is using this extension?

Anybody try removing the MotorolaSM56KUSB: extension so it won't load.
