Dropping Wi FI Signal

Ever since I installed 10.6 -- I constantly drop my wifi connection.
I have VPN turned off and the all the same settings from 10.5, and I never had a problem before.
Whether I am far away (reception is worse) or only 3 feet away, I drop my signal constantly for no reason.
I have latest Firmware on router and powered down modem and router.

Many times I can not turn off airport as well, and I need to restart my latpop in order to get a strong wifi signal again? Any suggestions?

My router is a Belkin G+ Mimo - most updated firmware

this is definitly not an issue with Router , interfering WLAN-Signals or else ...


my case:



MB: 10.6.7 (MB-Unibody2008)

Router: FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7113 Annex AFirmware-Version 90.04.82 [g,b, g+b (its all similar behaviour)]


Any WLAN-Device has NO issues on connectifity .. Linux, Windows, Printer even the iphone3GS run flawlessly ..


since upgrading the MB to 10.6.7 i experience the issue of dropping WLAN-connectifity .. Apple then may show me a standing link (icon) , but on the lowlevel it fails ... no TCP/IP connections possible .. no DHCP


DEBUG shows:

even if the link is up , i get grosse ping replies from my WLAN-Gateway .. sometime over timeout


This is a BAD issue !!! and i suppose it should be taken more seriously by Apple-develpment

Add me to the list - first time Mac purchase - Wireless drops 2-5 times per day on both the home network and the corporate network. Have an active call with Apple support right now - very disappointing - esp since I purchased a top line 15" MBP with all the bells and whistles - but the wireless will not stay connected - a real pain in my CITRIX virtual desktop environment. Never has this much trouble with my Windows machines.


Not really impressed as a first time Apple buyer.

Of course millions are using Wi-Fi on Macs without any issues, and I've had a lot more issues with the Windows laptops I've had to deal with.

Since a couple of weeks our Airport Extreme (2008) is dropping connection every single minute. It happens with MBP, Win7 laptop, iPhone, iPod Touch and other phones, both when using at once and separately (no interfering with each other). LAN is doing fine. All these devices can successfully connect to WiFi elsewhere (at work, at school, hotspots).

The Airport Extreme is not eligible for warranty, and since it's absolutely impossible to work in such conditions, we opt to buy a Lynksys router. But a device that cost us 170 or something euros has to last longer than 3 years....

After spending quite a bit of time on the phone with AppleCare about this problem, I finally went to a store to speak with a Genius tech. Of course my MBP worked just fine, incredibly fast even, on their network. He gave me an interesting tidbit regarding older technology routers. I use the standard 2Wire DSL modem/router that comes from AT&T, and apparently the newer AirPort cards are too advanced for these older routers- even when set to WPA2. I don't know if this is true or not, but when I tried his workaround my MBP is working beautifully on the home network. Essentially, I had to buy an AirPort Express (Extreme would also work, but I don't need the extra range), wire it into my current router and then set it up as a separate network. Everything else in the house runs off of the regular 2Wire wifi, but my MBP runs off of the AirPort Express network. Problem solved. I don't know if it is really a software problem or not, but this solution has solved the problem for me.

Mid 2010 MBP 10.6.4 and Linksys WRT120N

Same issues, router worked fine for 6 months then stuck on self-assigned IP, only my macbook, only my network. All other macs/laptops/desktops/smartphones/PCs connect fine.


This among a ton of other issues with this, every web browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Camino) crashes, kernel panics, already had a hard drive replaced, charger stopped working... nightmare.


I've read and tried everything in these threads, still nothing.

If you can't receive an IP address, then it's a DHCP issue.


If your Linksys provides DHCP service for your network, check its logs for errors and to make sure you haven't exhausted your pool of available IP addresses.


(Many people when configuring their wireless routers set it up to offer five or ten addresses and forget about it, but later when they have multiple phones, a game system or two and other devices like a Wi-Fi equipped TV or Blu-ray player, inadvertently exhaust the pool of available IP addresses their router can provide.)

i would love to see a solution :-) until now nobody who ever experienced this as his own problem ever found a solution nor stable workaround for this issue ..


most obscure advisories ( DHCP, change hardware, old router , bla bla bla ) come from people who are not affected by this just dropping a hint ( even if similiar voodoo has been postet again and again to no avail )


its sad that non but the affected people take this as a serious bug .. and i think most people ( experiencing this ) find an agreement that this s*it definitly started with an "update" ..


to get this on a common stream i think we should all open this incident at the given topic of this Thread to get a unified stance to apple-support ... else the individual is lullabied by a-support one by one ...

There have been many, many people helped by the advice you so easily dismiss, and the advice doesn't come as a "hint" but rather on over 25 years of working with networking and IP protocols.

I don't think you need to go back as fa as Tiger. 10.5.8 seems to be fine.
