Q: Dropping Wi FI Signal

Ever since I installed 10.6 -- I constantly drop my wifi connection.
I have VPN turned off and the all the same settings from 10.5, and I never had a problem before.
Whether I am far away (reception is worse) or only 3 feet away, I drop my signal constantly for no reason.
I have latest Firmware on router and powered down modem and router.

Many times I can not turn off airport as well, and I need to restart my latpop in order to get a strong wifi signal again? Any suggestions?

My router is a Belkin G+ Mimo - most updated firmware

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 2.16 - 15 Inch, Mac OS X (10.6), 4 GB RAM, 320 Gb HD

No, simply that even with the exact same symptoms, there are likely multiple root causes, such that when Apple releases a fix for one group of symptoms it's unlikely to fix them for everyone and may, in fact, exacerbate issues for others. Only time will tell.

I have read almost every post in this long thread, hoping to offer insight if I had any to give to people who need help (that includes you and your posts).

My point is that NOT everyone who had problems still has them, and that it's a shame there are still a few of you hanging out there... it was an attempt to be sympathetic, even though it's hard when people are ganging up on others in this thread.

As for insults... well, I think you know I'm only calling it as I see it. I think my references to bratty behavior is pretty lightweight as far as insults and venting goes. Take a long hard look at what you've written and how you come across for someone seeking help.

Your sarcasm ("And thank you for your suggestion..." --though if YOU read MY post, you would OBVIOUSLY know I wasn't making one? Merely pointing out that some people have been helped on this thread, and yes that's how long I've been following it!) really makes me want to help you, too.

I hope you have a solution soon, I hope your talk with Apple Support gets you the results that you don't believe you will get, and I hope that you understand that people here are only trying to help you even though you don't really act like you need it. Good luck to you.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood that then. Something else that I noticed: It happens most often when I'm streaming something over the network or downloading/watching a file/movie from my Mac Mini Server/Ubuntu Server... Maybe has something to do with high throughput?

I really don't understand what your intent here is. What are you trying to accomplish? I haven't insulted anyone here. Except maybe Apple. If you're on a self-appointed policing mission here for Apple then, ok, I understand. Since when should one not be allowed to voice a strong opinion about the matter at hand? Everything else I've been writing had to do with trying to stay on topic and again, not having to repeat everything a few posts down. And even if we haven't found a solution yet, I'm grateful to the people that have tried to help until now. If I have caused you to think differently then, really, I'm sorry. But no reason to start calling people "childish" or "whiners" or, in your last post, "bratty"...

    ATTENTION PLEASE!! EVERYBODY.

    Rollem's suggestion worked magically!!

'UNCHECK "WAKE FOR NETWORK ACCESS" IN SYSTEM PREFERENCES > ENERGY SAVER > POWER ADAPTER'

It's been 1/2 hour and web surfing is as smooth! Another thing I did was to manually filled IP address in Network preference on each machine rather than let them gain automatically. They still allocate wrong addresses auto.

Rollem, you are a saver. It may worked for me as I am running same OS version. You solved my problems I had for two months.

    THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

P.S. I am afraid, I cannot rate your post maybe because I did not start the thread.

First, 30 minutes of problem free surfing is hardly statistically significant with the issues as reported.

Second, this is a red herring. We power our machines from mains, not battery, and have always had this unchecked.

This is not the solution to the problems being reported here.

    I am sorry, Nutty87th.

I know Rollem's suggestion solved only my problem, may not the initial problem started this thread. I appologise.

By the way, Rollem and I both seem to running our machine through 'Power Adapter'. If you are not using battery, this same method may solve few others problems. It's been over an hour since my problem's gone.

    Well I truely hope so.

I was working with an Apple engineer to find out what was going on. It's been awhile since our last email exchange though. Pretty much ruled out my wireless network being the issue.

Out of frustration I did a full wipe and reinstall of 10.6, and then updated using Software Update. It worked pretty well for awhile. Before the 10.6.2 update and AirPort update, it did drop out once though. After the update it took me a good day or two to get it to reoccur. Now it happens at least once every 3-4 hours, especially during high network use, particularly HTTP.

Strongly considering taking it into the genius bar to have it looked at. The battery is shot again anyways, which was replaced late last year under AppleCare.

Exactly the same here. Did a clean install during this whole odyssey and for a while it worked. I was hoping it was solved until the problem started reoccurring again. Now it's back to the same frequency as before, especially during high traffic.

Not much help but just to add my voice to the list, just in case Apple are listening.

I have the same dropping of network problems on my new iMac running 10.6.2. My MBP running 10.5.8 doesn't have any problems at all.

Found a quick remedy and that was to "Renew DCHP lease" in the advanced network options within system prefs, under the TCP/IP tab.

Finally got fed up. Moved router and stuck a network cable in. No problems for 3 weeks

I also thought that it might have something to do with DCHP and set my MBP to use a static IP. That didn't help though. I guess when I turn Airport off and on it has the same effect as renewing the the DCHP lease...
I wish there was something in the logs apart from the messages that I posted above to figure out why this is happening...

Same here bud. I now have a 30m cable running all the way from the router upstairs, across the upstairs landing, down the stairs, through my lounge and to the dining room where my MacBook Pro is located.

Now all my network issues are no more!

I do love my MBP which complements very well my Windows desktop / laptop / netbook PCs, but would warn anyone who's considering one that if they only have access to wireless internet, be prepared to put up with disconnections or stay safe and purchase a PC. And that's a shame.

I do hope Apple will break their silence on this issue.

    HI !

This is getting even more clear to me, yesterday I added Belkin WLAN-router to my system so that
DLINK 2740b is taking care of ADSL 2+, DHCP and 802.11b WLAN with WEP and Belkin N1 Vision connected to DLINK switch is taking care 802.11n with WPA2.
Having mac mini and airport connected to Belkin 802.11n WLAN with WPA2 I was able download all night without dropping.

So to be more precise this game seems to be between Apple and DLINK, because all other PC's work fine with DLINK. Apple airport must have something which is not compatible with DLINK or DLINK something which is not compatible with Apple,,
Because Compaqs and all other network products I have are compatible with DLINK I think Apple still have to do something, they can do it together with DLINK if they like, but they should be able to get their products compatible with all mainstream routers.
