Found a password locked iPhone, how do I contact owner?

Found an original 8Gb iPhone in a mall parking lot last night. Tried to turn it on to figure out how to return it to owner and it's password protected.
Is there anyway short of trying all 9999 codes to unlock it so I can try and get it back to it's owner?

You could try going to an Apple or ATT store and see if they can match the phone's IMEI number to the owner.

Also report it to the main mall customer service center and the store it was found closest to.

You could also call AT&T WIreless customer service at 1-800-331-0500 (I'm presuming you're in the US) and let them know. They may be able to contact the owner and in some way arrange a return.

Thanks for being honest and attempting to return the iPhone to its owner.

Thanks for you suggestions. Planning on getting to an Aplle store today/tomorrow. *Does anyone know how to get the phone number of the iPhone off it while it's still locked?* Perhaps I can do a reverse lookup???

nothing you can do except bring it to an Apple Store, or an AT&T Store, or turn it in at the Lost & Found at the mall you were at
